CRX si $600 running(Auto>MAn-conver) worth it?
I've never had a CRX before, but i've been through 2 civic hatch's. My friend will most likely give me his Rex for $600 running in good condition, minus the crappy almost gutted interior. But unfortunately its Automatic. I just wanted some opinions on if it is worth it or not if i plan on doing Auto to MAnual conversion. I've never done one before, and i'll assume its a pretty big pain, especially with the amount of searching i've been doin.
Is it worth it just to get the CRX which has a good engine and good exterior??>....... or should i jsut wait it out.. and look harder??.....
Opinions?
thanks.....

I now someone who has done an auto to manual conversion and he said the only way he would ever do it is if he had both cars right next to each other and went part by part through the swap
http://members.aol.com:/jrmupzaii/crx2.html not me, but someone else who did it
I have done one and it isnt very hard at all. You get the trans, the ecu, the pedals, the shift cable and shift linkage and thats about it. If you know how to drop a trans you can do the swap. The worst part (which still isnt that bad) would be swapping out the pedal assembly since you have to basically lay under the dash. But you dont have to pull out the dash like people say the only thing you would have to do is pull out one of the heater ducts to access the top bolt that holds them in. Everything bolts right in but you do have to drill 2 holes for the shift linkage and figure out a way to cover up the extra hole from the auto trans or you can do what I am doing.....I cut out the manual trans part (the part that the inner boot goes onto) and I am tack welding it into place of the auto one it lines right up but you have to drill some holes for the screws to come through (where the linkage shifts to since the auto ones are covered up) But other than that its pretty simple but yo can do like everyone else does and just drill the holes and mount the linkage.
Hope that helps...
Hope that helps...
Am I the only one that's going to point out that they didn't make any SI CRX's with automatic trannies? The DX was the only model that it was even offered in, I believe all the HF's came with 5 speeds as well but those trannies suck. I've never done the swap and can't offer any real help except I have dropped many transmissions and it's not very hard so if that's the hard part then go for it.

Ok so they sold an auto SI in Canada... how many canadian SI's do you see driving around New Jersey? It said SI right in the title of the thread, if he was posting from Montreal or something then maybe i'd believe it's an auto SI.
Mitsubishi Eclipse's between 1995-1998 were not sold in Canada and I see them all the time here . Why is it so impossible that there could be a Canadian SI in the states?
Maybe if he were further north i'd believe that possibility... but there are tons of CRX's around there. Maybe if the CRX weren't offered in the states then more people would buy them from Canada but why go to Canada for a CRX when there are so many in your back yard? It's not impossible that it's a Canadian SI automatic it's just highly unlikely, and it's way more likely that he meant DX/STD not SI. Hell it could be a DX with an SI motor in it an a stock slush-box. We need to ask if it has:
A sunroof
door panels that say "CRX"
rear disc brakes (if it's a '90-'91)
and so forth to see if it's a real SI. I don't think it is, it just seems highly unlikely that this guy found a Canadian SI automatic CRX for $600 in New Jersey.

lol.. well you have me second guessing myself at this point. But to clear things up i'll post up a pic when i see the car again tomorrow or the next day.
kranked91dx..thanks.. i'll definitely be posting about the swap soon along with some pics of the car. I'm always up for a challange anyway, so i dont find something like this that bothersom. And from what vince said, boosts my confidence a bit. The only thing i'm worried about, is the break lights/back up light wiring, and heat from the shift boot after i drill the holes. But i'll figure something about....just the damn wiring.
thanks for the opinions...

I'll give you a hand with the wiring, but no big deal at all, you'll have to change the ECU though, sorry that I didn't mentionned it before,
anyway, take your time, do thing's right the first time, and get a GOOD clutch, not a crap pepboy peice of ****, get an act or some brand you like, Exedy make good one too.
now the worst part as I said before is to put the damn pedal rack in there, it's tight as hell.
I got heat from the dust boot too, but that is not that bad, jus a bit, and I run no cat, with the hole in the floor straight from the car I can see the asphalt under !!!
don't worry, just do it right, it's not that bad.

Well it actually doesnt matter whether its an Si or not when doing the swap. The only thing that you have to worry about is if you have MPFI or DPFI cause that will determine which ECU you will need. If you have MPFI you can use a 88-91 manual Si ecu from the Civics or CRXs or a manual civic EX ecu. Now if you have DPFI you can use the ECU from a 88-91 manual DX or civic dx or std.
As for the brake lights there is no extra wiring for them they are both off the brake pedal (thats where the switch is) as for the reverse lights your going to have to run them from the automatic shifter out to the manual trans its only 2 wires and not very hard. As for the heat you use some aluminum or alike to cover the holes with just drill some holes for the cover bolt it in place and then spray some rust proofing over it that should keep out the heat. The only thing is though is the hole where the shifter goes through if you dont have that piece from the manual and weld that in place I dont see anyway around that one? If you have any other questions just let us know...
Oh and so sorry I didnt see the little si in the title. I was more worried about the info in the post.

oh i would definitely look harder.. i bet i can find one easily.. but the thing is i'm poor as $hit right now, and my friend is going to let me pay him off... yeah i know... funny i'm making a pay off for 600 haha.. thats how poor i am now. But i got pics of the car.. i'll post for the hell of it.
AS i figured, its a DX, i looked under the hood. I was hoping it was from canada like my old Hatch, but its all good. I just have to make sure i can get it running.. the engine is in good shape(i think)... i just have to figure out the problem. i hope its not the ecu...

Yeah, I wish they were in California. Unless it has been severely raped, it's way more over here.

First where are the pics?? I want to see what $600 is going to buy you. And second why do you hope its not the ECU?? If your going to do the auto to manual swap your going to be replacing that anyway, if your not going to plan on doing it right away I have an auto DX ECU out of a CRX you can buy from me but like I had already said if your doing the swap you wont need it.
