Driving Impressions - Falken Azenis 205/50/15
Car setup:
'01 ITR - Zeal B6 (Hard setup) Front(4) Rear(3) - SSR Camber Kit (Front/Rear)
Well, I've had my new tire on for about 800 Km (500 Miles) and I'm just floored as how well my car sticks to the road. In hearing all of the rave reviews on these tires, I was very curious but wary as the stock RE010's are just amazing (in my opinion).
Over this past weekend, I've done some very spirited back road driving and I find the limit of adhesion I'm used to has been completely shattered!! I find I'm able to take some turns 10 - 20% quicker than with the stock tires. A
to these tires.
I guess this level of performance does come at at price, comfort over small expansion gaps is non existant. It's a much stiffer ride, but in order to perform, that's an essential trait. I have found that although it seems like the rear end of the car is going to step out on a tight turn, it sorta "floats" and hangs on, a very weird feeling at first, but once used to it, it's quite a rush.
Congrats to Falken for such a Rock Solid R&D program.
Falken's got my
approval!

Be careful on open roads.
And if you think they stick well with spirited driving, you should take the car to the track and Really find out where the limit is.
Good luck and be safe.

1Grey: I know, the "true" limit of ones car can only be found when the relentless persuit of perfection and the 1/1000th of a second has been attained and one cannot perform better. (bad attempt at a deep thought).
Actually we had quite a bit of rain this past Saturday and didn't have much problems with the tires, but I also havn't pushed it for obvious reasons.
I can't wait to get to the track, I feel like a 10 year old who is just tall enough for his first roller coaster ride.

I'm sure someone is dying to be an *** and say "welcome to last year" regarding your post review, so I just saved them the trouble, and I of course am only joking
But here's a question for ya: what size of wheels are you running? Stock 6" width? Or something wider? I think Azenis have amazing grip too, but turn-in blows, and the response of the car in a slalom style movement feels hella-sloppy. What are your thoughts on that bit of the handling? Have you noticed that too?
Ben, who would like to try some 195 width Azenis on stock 15x6 wheels if they were available.

Yes stock 6" rims are sloppier than a 7" wide rim. But, will do and you can get used to them. I've autocrossed on them and find with higher pressures and at speed that they are still a pretty damn responsive tire. I think I like 'em better for track use since their price is so little and their performance is quite admirable.
They do tend to get greasy after a few hot laps though and you find yourself sliding a bit. For Autocross some serious guys spray cool water on them between hot runs to keep them from getting to loose.
But, I understand what you are saying and noticed the exact same thing when I swapped my RE010's out for wider 205/50 series tires. They have more of a vague turn in.

My only worry is with the rain here in the swamps of FL. Not like I get any traction in the rain as it is. I can spin the wheels in 5th gear (honestly)
I need new tires soon though... where should I get the tires from? Any suggestions?

Get them from Discount Tire Direct. There are places out there that have cheaper prices, but you will get free shipping so it actually works out better.

Don't give all the credit to the tires.
This is one of the great things of improving as a driver, the car gets faster without any additional mods to the vehicle.

So i'm getting better?
I hope so....
Still, the tires are far FAR better than my S-03's were on the track, better than any street tire I've ever driven on.
Chris - who is an improving driver.

If they were "really bald," then they're not going to get much better than that.
I find that my Azenis stick even more as they continue to wear, and I don't intend to stop using them at autocrosses until they cord.

Ben - you need to take a spin in my car w/azenis on 15x7 rims....turn in is MUCH better. I wish I'd known...you could have driven her at the expo!

I was worried about the "greasy" feeling when I bought these tires early this year. After two track days, I'm not sure what people are talking about. The worst punishment that the tires got were over 45 minutes of 10/10ths driving (brakes are smoking) and the still stick like glue!!
yes... these tires are slippery as hell when you first get them. I am in a GSR with Koni/Comptech suspension so I can enjoy some R_like cornering in my car. I had RE730s and I stayed with them for a while$$$ 205/50/15. They were great on wet pavement, however driving fast in the wet is rediculously stupid unless the roads are empty IMHO. Once the Azenis got heated and cooled a couple times and got the snot rubbed offa them holy HOLD batman. I wasnt used to staying in 3rd around some familiar corners and wanting to go faster. I have come to understand that at 60-70 a tire... you cant beat the azenis. the only other tire I am interested to try is the dare I say 195/50/15 S-03 at $75-80 a tire on tirerack. I have 6500 on them and they are about 1/3 done I expect to get about 15-20K on them.
Azenis, y0
props to ITRChris for the mad hookup on the sideways

i have a 15x6 rim for a ek......what size tire do you recomment since you say the 6" width is sloppy with 205/50s............so 195/55 is better?
http://www.onlinetires.com I got mine from there, they were $57 a tire + shipping when I bought them....now it looks like they're $62 a tire + shipping (205/50/15)....But if any of you have a Sears Tire Center around they will price match 110% of any online place....so you can prob get them for the same price (after tax) but you wont have to pay for shipping
Oh and I love these tires!
