Here's some pics that were shot at the NASA event at Willow Springs this past weekend. I'll have a full writeup later, as will Tom Liang and Glen Kawano, I'm sure.
Pics from a friend who came by on Saturday:

My pics from the whole weekend, including the 3-hour enduro on Saturday night:

My apologies in advace for some of the redundancy; I didn't have much time to take pics outside of our pit area.
More pics from the last 2 Socal WCHC events that I forgot to put up:

Have fun...I'll have more to say later.

I was there running HPDE, what happened to Bota's car after the race sunday? It looked really bad, from what I saw it looked like him and the porsche had an incident, but I'm not really sure..

When the Spec Miata racers threw up that huge, thick dirt cloud after spinning every which way into the dirt; the Porsche was told by his radio person to slow for an accident at turn 9. So the car slowed to a crawl anticipating the possibility of some car blocking the track.
Bota, some 15+ seconds behind the Porsche cought up to the Porsche due to the Miata incident. He was able to navigate through turn 9 faster because by the time he got to turn there, the dust could had already thinned down for better visibility. So the two cars approached turn 1 & 2 almost side by side, we couldn't see turn 2 from where we were standing, but Bota's car reappeared ahead of the Porsche. The Porsche's crew chief was notified via radio simultaneous to our crew chief that they both "touched".
So, Bota ran the last few laps with the front damage trying to keep whatever lead he had over Andy Hope's CRX. Which dwindled from ~10 seconds down to about 2-3 car lengths when he took the checkered flag.

1.1 second differential at the end, to be exact. A very close finish. We just finished watching the in-car video from that race; Andy moved through traffic like mad on that last lap.
So I hear the Porsche owner is paying for the damage to Shawn's car?

Yikes! Andy Hope is a super nice guy and awesome driver. It just makes me sick that he hasn't taken care of his EK.
Not sure of the details, but the Porsche driver/owner offered to get things squared away. I guess he lost it right in front of Shawn during the turn, which caused the incident.
I forgot to snap pictures of the damage done on the Porsche, but those are carbon fibre panels on the car! I can only imagine the cost to repair that.

HI!
well, I had a great weekendto start.
I went into this weekend very concerned that the fresh gsr/itr motor i built was not going to perform as well as the LSvtec motor i had previously destroied at fontana. This new motor is smaller and has less compression due to following Honda Challenge rules and availability in parts not to mention time constraints. I dynoed the motor with all similar parts as the last motor cept for the Port Flow head but it just didnt make me happy. 10 ft-lbs is a lot less torque! after the dyno session Comptech stepped in at the last moment with their race header and that seemed to bump up the power but i have no dyno figures to be certain. I just knew not to expect sub 1:31 lap times this weekend.
Saturday was hot and dry. The tires warmed up quickly and became greasy fast. I was running 35s-36s and qualified 1st in H1 for the race with a 34.7 -sounds weak to me, but when comparing to everyone else times, you can blame the heat for slowing the cars down. fyi 2nd and 3rd position was 2 seconds off my pace. I won the race without any issues-oh except for 3rd gear poping out every once and a while! d'oh
Sunday went about the same. the race was going great as i led the honda challenge cars. Andy Hope was not far behind in the black crx. every lap i was adding a second to my lead over him. i decided to set a pace for myself so that i could conserve my tires. My new crew chief Paul Subramanya was doing an excellent job keeping me informed via radio what was happening on track so i was getting comfortable out there till he gave me a "caution in 9!" i look ahead and see a huge cloud of dirt. i begin to think about the movie 'days of thunder.' -mario, to correct you when i had approached the dust, it was thicker than soup! i entered the dust with nothing but hope that the car that had spun off course was on the dirt and not on track. i was at about 60-80 mph! now that would have been a horriffic wreck but i was lucky and no one was in my way. As i entered the dust i had noticed that the porsche was crawling thru the dirt so i thought, "hey cool im leading the entire race now" soon enough the porsche was on my bumper out of turn 1 so i took turn 2 wide as to let my porsche friend thru. he took that turn faster than normal and started to get a little wiggly. i was right on his rear bumper because i was hoping i could enjoy the view behind such a beautiful racecar. the next think i knew he was going into a spin and i had no where to go. i was at full traction and could only keep my line. my left front corner plows into his passenger front wheel and as i go by his car drags along the side of my integra. i hear nothing dragging against the wheel so i keep my speed and lead over andy hope. Paul sees the damage on the car as i go by the front straight and quickly talks to officials to make sure that they do not black flag me unless there is a serious issue with the car (GREAT THINKING!). I am not aware of the damage and the car actually handled about the same. i continue the race and have to fight my way thru traffic. the white flag comes out and i keep my lead over hope. messing up your lead on the last lap is like missing an easy lay-up in basketball so i take my time to cross the finish line. sorry to burst your bubble on the 1.1 seconds behind for hopes finish but to be exact, it doesnt matter
oh and sunday the tranny problem got worse as shifting into 3rd and forth was as painful as getting a filling in your tooth. i managed to run the race fortunately.
2 more wins for SBE! props to the SBE crew once again for a fine job.

Blah, blah, blah.....race report, chaos on the track, impact, victory....
....but did you notice that the guy in the blue Sparco suit in Shawns podium picture is getting absolutely no attention from the trophy girls?
Scott, who thinks racing is even more interesting when you stop to look at all the minute details...

FORTUNE CHANGES…
Finally at the W.C.H.C. event last weekend. A change in fortune came (At least mechanically) for the Special Projects Team. After a Three Event run of Bad Luck... After Qualifying Second fastest in H1 in a race of about 40 cars of mixed Classes We were holding a comfortable 2nd. Position when Crazy Andy in the CRX tried a desperate passing maneuver on the inside of 9. ( No one passes the Kiwi 9!!) The two cars touched sending me spinning into the dust of the infield. I didn't mind the tap so much, I thought Andy was going to loose it too... but he managed to gather it all up and take off!! That really pissed me off! After spitting out all the crap and tumble weeds I set out with the blood lust up, carving through the field to try and regain my lost 2nd position... Unfortunately the chequred flag came out and the best I could manage was 3rd. a few car lengths behind Andy. One more lap was all I needed and I would have had him! The second race on Sunday started out with 55 cars of various classed lined up on pre grid while the American Sedan race was in progress… A bystander noticed that one of the rear shock shafts on the Special projects Motor Sports Type R Integra had pushed through its mounting … With a few minutes to spare before the start of the race I drove back to the team pits and replaced the shock. The race had just started, as I was buckle ling in to the car. I re joined the race right at the tail end of the field of 55 cars and set out on an impossible mission to catch the leaders who were almost a lap ahead… Once again, pulling out all the stops I charged through the field in a flawless display of high speed driving! ( I just thought I'd throw that in) to catch up with the tail end of the Honda Challenge cars only to be Black Flagged while in about 15th.position. The Stop and Go penalty was for excessive speed in the Pit lane when I joined the race. Once again I charged out and through the field for the remaining 10 laps. Not enough time to get to the front but still able to finish 14th.overall and 6th. the in the H1 Class. “The Car ran and handled beautifully throughout the race. I think Shaun, Andy, Glen and the rest of you guys need to be ready for a real battle at the next race at Buttonwillow on June 22nd. We will be losing some weight and gaining some HP!

Oh my god, I had a bad weekend. Here is a summary:
Saturday
- Engine was running funny, sometimes losing power, sometimes stumbling at throttle tip-in and during modulation. I do one lap in the warm-up session, and we look over everything. The engine also hunts around during hot idle. Never did that before. Co-driver goes out, no problems.
- The stumbling problem gets worse in qualifying. I come in after 1 lap. We find a loose map sensor connector, which we zip tie down. I go out again, and the engine seemingly loses most of its power and runs very weakly. We check and clean the connectors and don't find anything. My warm-up lap is my qualifying, and I am gridded in the back. Co-driver goes out, no problems.
- During the Saturday race, the engine gets weak after 4 laps while I am in 5th (after starting 15th). I come in. We look at it again, and the alternator belt is gone! So I was running on batteries the whole time. I really wish I had a charge indicator warning light.
DNF for Saturday.
Sunday
- I go out. Car is running okay, but the part-throttle stumbling problem remains. Engine transient throttle response? I believe in it for sure, now that I don't have any! This is frustrating. I will have to get the car to a dyno and get the part throttle stuff tuned, which most tuners sort of ignore.... Co-driver goes out, notices things are funny.
- Qualifying. I have an okay session, and get on the grid 3rd, which is right behind Shawn. I am uneasy because things are going wrong, and they haven't been addressed because we can't find the root cause of the problem yet.
- Sunday race. I am doing pretty good Shawn takes off while Andy and I battle an SU RX-7 that doesn't understand that we are in Honda Challenge and he is not. I am right with them until on the 5th or 6th lap when I look down and see the warning lamp on. The dash reads "OIL TEMP 260". I have a great oil cooler, and it NEVER goes that high, and is most likely a sign of impending doom. Bearing about to spin, something. I back off and pull back into the pits.
And I was doing so well! Definite podium finish, and half lap or more ahead of the next car back. DNF for Sunday.
- I talk to John at Hytech and discuss it (he is my engine builder). The engine has been through the equivalent of about two seasons of use and might be wearing. It's time for a refresh. Gotta pull the engine.
I want to thank NASA for putting on a great event, Richard Michelangelo (from Michelangelo Motorwerkes, my intrepid crew of one), and Hytech Exhaust (engine builder and exhaust supplier).

It was great to watch you guys duke it out...Glen it was good seeing you again - bummer about the problems with the car. Hopefully you and Richard can sort the car out before the next race.
BTW, I was driving my red miata in HPDE 3 and was running with the Integra below - are you on this board ? Were you instructing in HPDE (X=instructor) ? It was nice of you to let me by but I couldn't pull away from you a whole lot...I was exhausted from the heat, my Azenis were getting pretty greasy out there too. I went home after the second session.
See you guys at buttonwillow...

Don't worry... We'll catch up!!! You have just had a taste of real touring car racing... A little rubbing gets the blood flowing Huh? I'm sure we can get you back together again.
Looks like Glen Will have to use my old/Spare engine for Buttonwillow, The one I beat him in round 1 With.
Hopefully our new Mugen engine will be ready by Buttonwillow? If not the one that's in the Car now will be ok... I think we can find a few more Horses???

We also had an alternator belt flip over on us which I replaced with a new one before Sunday's Qualifying... While changing the belt I noticed that the alternator pulley had no Nut holding it on!
But the pulley was really tight on the shaft so I thought it will be ok... And it was,
All through qualifying and the race.
When we got home and I started the car up to drive it off the trailer...The Alternator pulley fell off!!! I think my luck is really starting to change!

Hey SBE are u down to run the enduro next month. That was a blast! Great job by the way. I don't know if u know but we were in 2nd place in ES until the off at nine thing(don't worry Sam isn't hatin...) and finished fourth. We were only 10 laps down. love to do it again.. Hope ur car is okay btw. Hopefully our changes will get us up to speed so we can keep up with u. Later...
I have to publicly thank to everyone supporting our team on and off the track, all sponsors, Shaggy(team Endless5Zigne), Mr. Hope, Tom, Shaun K(Hybrid Racing), GK, Richard (Michelangelo Racing), Mr. Mock, Shawn Bota(SBE), and friends. I hope our racing potential will shift up to several level by the next event, so that we can perform tail to nose touring car racing to media. Thanks again, and let's inspire new generations to road racing. By the way, I look gooood!!
