Default my mechanic is SC all the way...

Well, I went to my mechanic to ask him how much he would charge to put a turbo in my future GSR. He said that turbo would wear my engine out a lot faster than a supercharger would. First of all, is that true? Second, if you are drag racing...turbo is best right? If you autox you would rather have a SC? From searching it seems like in autox you would want a SC because of power in turns. What do you think?

turbo all the way. you can make alot more power in the end and have the power come on later in the powerband for better traction

if my "mechanic" ever used that kind of logic, the only thing he'd be doing is sweeping the shop floor.

lol...well im only looking to stay at 6-9 PSI. So getting a turbo because it has more potential doesnt really interest me. Plus...you can just put a stepper pully on a SC to get more boost. It is such a hard decision...and so much money...I dont want to spend 1-2 years saving and then it blows up!

I would question your mechanics ability to work on your car after hearing that.
Ask him to explain how a turbo wears your engine out faster. The only difference between a turbo and jrsc is the turbo will have a cooler intake temp (due to the intercooler) which is better for the engine. The turbo is belt driven and the turbo is exhaust driven. Both can be tuned the same using the equiptment (stand-alone) so as far as tuning goes it's the same. I don't understand how a turbo can wear out your engine faster then a sc....

a SC has to take a little power before it can give it right? Since it runs off the engine?

Do your research, at 9psi th sc will create more heat (unless it's aftercooled like the vortec kit) so power production will be down drastically.
Figure at 9psi a turbo should make about 260whp give or take a little (seen as high as 309whp @10psi) and a sc will make about 220whp give or take a little.
I guess everybody has their oppinion (your mechanic) but his oppinion sounds like he's trying to make is sound like a fact which is so far from the truth

Well do your research, figure out what will suit you best. But i recomend a turbo over sc anyday, if matched properly you can have one killer set-up that will beat any sc set-up.
want low end power get a smaller turbo, want lots of power get a larger turbo.

Inform your mechanic that he's full of manure. If anything, blowers put more wear on your engine. All the extra pull from the blower on the crank can really start to wear away the main bearings if you're trying to run a lot of boost on a serpentine pulley system. Go turbo!

Did he follow up that statment with, "just make sure it comes with directions.", Find a performance garge to do it.

Nothing like the tone of a vortech blower through a 2.5" exhaust w/ no cat!

You should:

A. Kick your mechanics ***.
B. Never go back to that mechanic.
C. For performance, find a "tuner", not just a "mechanic...

damn, you guys are harsh.

its possible that this so called "mechanic" is a v8 head and hasnt gotten with the times..so he's stuck in the "old days" prolly thinks carb's are better than fuel injection too..

.....turbo is the way to go..

.imagine a single turbo'd, fuel injected, stroker 383 sbc...wow..i bet it would rip..stick that **** in an s10...i bet it would be fun...pull wheelies on the street..

technically speaking I would believe the statement about a turbo wearing out an engine faster would be true, due to the fact that a turbo engine has pressure both on the intake stroke and the exhuast stroke and a supercharger engine has only pressure on the intake stroke, therefore a turbocharged engine is putting twice as much stress on the internal components. I cant say how much faster it would wear out an engine and it might be very minimal, but then again that would only be during the time that your boosting or near boost.
