Coilovers or springs?
What up All,
As some may already know, I just got a 2000 Civic a few weeks ago.
I have searched through the archive and I have found some pros and cons for both springs and coilovers. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on which ones were better?
I am still in the planning phase right now but already got the rims (17 in) in mind. Just not sure if I want to go with coilovers or springs. I'd like the wheel to just fit the wheel well perfectly (I don't want it slammed). Any suggestions?
Also, what other costs might I have if I go with one over the other (i.e struts)? Just want to have a ball park figure of what I am looking at.
Thanks everyone!

well...I personally would prefer coilovers, becuase they allow you to adjust the height so you can change it. Springs you cannot, springs are usally ALOT smoother ride than coilovers, so it is really up to....Good ride maybe not good height....Bad ride Good looking height. As far as price goes, with anything it is what you buy...you can buy goldine for like 100 or tein for 1600....so a good pair of coilivers and struts will run you about 500-800....ie. skunk2 250....kyb's 60 each..so you figure it out....just choose what you want and pick it.....ps....GET 16's
Cool....Thanks for th info.
I only want to drop it about an inch or so, like I said not really interested in slamming it. Maybe i can just go with springs in that case. What do you think? Will I still need to replace the struts if I get springs?
Any reason why you recommend 16's? I have seen opinons on both 16's and 17's. What looks better? Will the ride be that much different?
Thanks again!

If you're only looking to drop the car an inch, get some Eibach Pro-Kit springs. Follow those up with Koni Sport (yellows) shocks, and you'll have a car that handles good with a slightly more aggressive stance. Also, the Konis can adjust for height a little, so if the Pro-Kits don't drop the car as much as you want, you can adjust the shocks.
Another option is to use coilover sleeves such as Ground Control. You can get much stiffer spring rates, which may or may not be useful depending on how you want to use your car.
Which brings me to the question: How do you want to use your suspension?
I.e., are you going to be just daily driving it, or are you planning on autocrossing or tracking the car?
Answer that and the decision will be easier

Yeh..get the Eibach Pro-Kit
, since you would only want to lower an inch/so. I was running Eibach Pro with stock absorber back then, it was alrite...but it was kind of jumpy..but still comfy. Ive fitted in konis (yellow) with it now, less jumpy...superb ride
. I chose this setup, cause juz like you, i would only want to lower the car a little + better handling. Coilovers are the way to go for performance though.

reason for 16's over 17's ....right now you want 17-18's cause it'll look eh' better i guess you would say but once to get into the whole honda scene and want to go for performance you will want 15-16's that are a little wider than stock, but not so wide or heavy like 17's-18's to weigh you down.so to save you time from going to the tricked ricer/wanna be baller phase by gettin 18's now you can just get some nice looking 16's..maybe some rotas. for you yokoaham paradas would prob be a good tire.and drop it like 2" with springs. If you want your 1-1.5 in drop and 17's... good wheels to get would be racing harts, or volk's. i started out with 18" konig tantrums on a 99 si and man was i retarded.. lowered it with skunk 2 all the way down.. rubbed all over the place.. had nitto tires that cracked all the time cause they were 35 seriesand caber wear got real bad .. luckily i sold em before i had to buy new tires cause they were way too pricey for me...good luck choosing

what i have on my car is the eibach sportline kit and they set my car pretty good w/ 17's, but if i could do it all over i would get 16's, ground control coilovers and set my **** on the ground....
how come everyone keeps saying springs for a smoother ride? i had ground controls and koni yellows and it was like OEM ride. what are you guys talkin about. bro, if you got the money get full coilovers like tein SS. those are great for daily and give you performance as well. or just get koni yellows with ground control coilovers, and you'll be good. good luck man.
oh yea. i had 17's too and i hated driving on them. i said 16's would be perfect. good luck man

Hey Everyone......Thanks for the info!
The car will pretty much be my daily driver. Therefore, I do not want to sacrifice too much (in terms of ride quality).
Would 17's be too much if I am going to just drop it about an inch or so? How much do prokits run w/shocks?

Nice Quote.
i dont like the idea of 17's first of all cause in my opinion it just looks to damn bling on civics, and secondly you will end up getting bigger, more expensive tires, that are lower profile and that wear faster, thus you end up spending much more money in the long run... heres some prices on tires for falken azenis ( a very popular tire in the scene )
Azenis-
205/50/15 - $ 72.00
per tire
215/45/16 - $ 105.00
per tire
225/45/17 - $ 120.00
per tire
so you are going to spend 60 more on a set of tires that will wear faster ? but then again its up to you !!! ps i have coilovers and i love the adjustability of em, just spend the extra dough and get coilovers, you wont regret it !

****,...16's or 17's...that is a new question to deal with. I'd probably have to see some in person to know for sure.
Anyway, do springs really give a better ride?
How much would a pair of good coilovers cost? What other parts would I need to replace at the same time?

Ride quality depends on two things:
—The spring rate
—The damping on the shocks
It does not matter whether the springs are on adjustable perches (coilovers) or not, the ride quality is determined by the stiffness of the springs and the damping of the shocks. If you have stiff *** springs, and stock shocks, your ride will be shitty. But, if you have stiff springs and shocks with damping appropriate for the spring rate, the ride will not be nearly as harsh.

This is not necessarily the case. See my above post.

it all depends on the application, and what you are building your car for...both springs and coilovers are good, but it all depends on the situation.
sooner or later performance will be ur main concern and 17 s will just rob u of ur power..too heavy..and if u want it for a daily driver..forget it, with the lower profile tires and higher spring rates ur going to shake ur teeth loose
considering the potholes on todays hiways..i wouldnt trust my car on the road with 35 or 40 series tires on a daily driver
