I was wondering what the best way to remove carbon buildup in the intake and exhaust ports of a head? Is there a good chemical or tool that could be used for this?

 

My mechanic friend at a Honda dealer told me that Chevron Techron (in the bottle) is the best to reduce carbon build up. He was told this by Honda engineers when he was training at Wisconsin or some Honda training location.

So I finally broke down and bought a bottle. I must say, I felt a difference in acceleration and overall smoothness of the drivetrain. About 3 months ago I had cleaned out the TB with the Valvoline Synthetic TB cleaner and I didn't feel a diff like the Techron stuff made. So I say try it, it's less than $10 anyways. Just follow the directions.

Where did you get that Techron stuff from?

(I have a feeling its gonna be some West Coast place that we don't have here on the East Coast. I might just try Pep Boys and/or AutoZone for it..)

Wait, they don't have Chevron in the East Coast? Wow.

By a qt. of ATF and pour it in your crankcase, it will burn up all the carbon in there, also you will be able to drive around with clouds of smoke coming from exhaust. It's fun. People don't like it though.

Of course that does work, but Techron cleans a lot more, such as the fuel injectors...

 

If you're talking about cleaning by hand, try card cleaner, any brand will do. It's a fairly strong solvent type stuff that comes in an aerosol can. A toothbrush works good for those spots that don't want to come clean.

 

You can just also remove your t/b and clean with a brush, or use a solvent too.

Mopar Combuston chamber cleaner works for me. I used it at 35K and at 52000 when we tore it down, there was little to no carbon build-up. This inludes pistins, valves and the such. You can find it at your local *cough* Dodge dealer.

Yes- Techron CONCENTRATE is excellent- they have it at Meijer, Target, and most automotive stores. Be sure to use the concentrate.
