I am looking for a first bike, but I don't want to get a road style harley looking bike or a dirt bike that is streetable either. Whatever happend to older Ninjas or CBR's?
I need help on where to look for bikes in the Bay Area or on the net, but I never can pull up the type of bike I want for the $ I want to spend on them. I know so many people who said they bought a ninja or an older cbr for around that easily, but I can never find any good deals.
And lastly, how does one go about getting a bike license? I heard people say take a sherrifs test first to get prepaired and then go take the written, get a permit and take the driving as soon as you get good. Any tips?
TIA

sign up for a Motorcycle Safty Foundation course, cost under $200. Graduation qualifies as the driving part of the DMV test and you get a discount for insurance too. Written test at the DMV will get you permit to ride during daylight.
Look on craig's list for bikes under $2K:

I recommend one of the kwak 500EXs or equivalent.

I think bikes command more money in the bay than elsewhere. Consider it part-and-parcel with your excruciatingly high rent and gas. You could try buying it out-of-state and having it shipped. That's what I did with my CBR-F3. The good deals are hard to come by. Just be patient.

Man, I hear you. Makes it hard to live here because everything is just getting more pricey.

Thanks for the recomendation. I didn't know I could do that. So I should get my permit, ride a little and take the course? Do I need a bike first to take the course?

They supply the bikes at MSF. Definatly recomended.
As for what you are looking for bikes are much more expensive here, so you just gotta look for a long time and hop on a good deal once you see it. I can always speak highly of the Honda Hawk and Honda CB-1. Both sporty bikes in the $2,500 to $3,000 range.
Try http://www.craigslist.org - it's where I found my bike. 88 Hawk in good condition with sensable mods for $2,300.
