hey i was searchin about stock shocks and if they will pop out or not if i dont use a spring compressor to hold the spring in when i unlosin the bolt on top to take out the springs for my 88 civic dx hatch any of you guys who have a 88-91 hatch kno if the springs pop out hard or not? i just installed springs for my friends rsx and the dont pop out at all but my friends integra did so now its my turn..will the spring pop out and is there a link or anything to show me what bolts/nuts ineed to take out for my whole shock to come out becuz i think im missing sumtin when i was tryin to take out the shock today..pls help
I dont know if they "pop out hard" or not... but I would just go to kragens/autozone/pepboys almost any autoparts store and borrow a spring compressor... its free with deposit.
they wont pop out hard, they just put pressure on the top bolt to remove the cover that holds the spring in, if you dont have a compressor the nut will just sit and spin
You can do what I did...if you're just unbolting the stock shock/spring assembly, and you have a lawn, just go plop it on the lawn on it's side, have a friend put some pressure on it with his/her foot, and start unscrewing the top nut. This is what I did and nothing flew more than 6 inches or so.

p.s. If you really want to use a spring compressor, you can rent them at most auto parts stores for a small fee, or sometimes, for free.

those stupid spring compressors you can rent at parts stores suck. they're designed for huge springs with 5 or 6 coils. they're almost useless on honda struts.
they won't pop very hard. just leave everything bolted up, don't loosen anything but the top bolt. have somebody stand on the rotor to put wieght on the suspension so it won't be as harsh. that's the way i've always done it, and nobody ever got injured and no parts were ever damaged in the process.
