Apexi N1 Silencer = Performance? -
hrm... just wondering. i have a 98 gs-r and if i were to purchase the apexi n1 exhaust system will i need a different cat? also i heard that if you use the silencer it drops the maximum performance of the n1 is capable of around (5 to 15% power cutdown)? true? thx.
I have an N1, and when I put the silencer I really don't feel a difference in power. Dyno numbers might prove me wrong but on my car I really like the silencer in.
No, you don't need a different cat. It will bolt right up. As far as the silencer goes, yes you will lose HP. How much, well that is disputed, but many say you lose almost as much as you gained from the exhaust. So is it worth it to run around all the time with it, no. But it is a nice thing to have for long trips, etc.

typically silencers are going to increase backpressure which will decrease high end HP but will increase low end torque.
I had an N1 w/ silencer on my old accord and I couldnt notice much of a difference on or off in performance.

hell yeah it does. I only use mine on my Tanabe racing medallion on road trips.

It depends on the rest of your engine setup.
I saw a dyno that actually increased performance with the silencer in. Now obviously the silencer really doesn't increase performance, it was more of incosistances in dyno runs, but if your engine isn't creating enough HP to take advantage of your current exhaust system, a silencer isn't going to make much of a difference.

This one sums it up the best. After I read this post I paid really close attention to how my car performed with the silencer in and out. The reason I dont mind it for daily driving is it does increase the mid to low end torque. It however does take a nice chunk of power post vtec.
My vote = In for daily driving (unless you are planning a wild drive) and long road trips. Out for racing or anytime you want max power.

well... my **** dyno tells me the power has dropped off through the whole rev range with a silencer in.
doughy throttle response at low rpms, nowhere near as much action at high rpms.
but then, this could be a touch of the placebo effect, i'd be interested to try it out on a dyno...
