Default Question concerning drive shafts... plz help!?

My car was making a funny noise from the passenger front wheel, so i thought i would lift the entire front end of my accord with jacks and shift the baby in drive... to my SURPISE & SHOCK, only the passenger front wheels were going?! OMG!

Correct me if i'm wrong, but shouldn't both wheels in the front be spinning if u have the car in drive?! So i'm thinking i've been driving on 1 wheel only?!

Obviously it could be the transmission is bad, but aren't both drive shafts suppose to be spinning to spin both wheels?!

Any suggestions or help is needed here... besides the obvious of new car, new engine, new tranny, ect...

Thx!

The attack is a kick-*** kit car dude! It's the only reason i'm still keeping my 4th gen accord around, but i prefer the lamborghini kits!

Any more help on this?!

How would i go about checking my differential?! I'm so afraid to drive my car!

Can i drive the car like that?... long-term or short-term problems?!... present problems?!

I understand how the differential works now... maybe it has no oil?!

No man, your differential is fine, that's how the car works, the wheel with the least resistance gets all the power.

Haha, this is funny. This is how we learn though. Your car is normal. If both wheels are off of the ground they both may spin or just one. Hold the spinning tire and you will notice the other tire spinning.

Just like Martaigne said...

In this case, maybe my brakes are locking out the other tire?!... man, i'm so new to this differential thing even though i understand how it works now...

I will do the test with holding the spinning tire to see if the other one spins...

Any more suggestions or help?! Could use all the help i can get on this! Thx!

If you can't grab the one wheel & make it stop spinning, that means your other-side brake is dragging. Nobody's brakes & bearings are completely friction-free, so naturally one side will have slightly more friction than the other. Not a problem.

I remember seeing another post somewhere (maybe not on H-T). He lifted the front wheels, spun one wheel, & he noticed that it made the other wheel spin the OPPOSITE direction. He thought his transmission was toast!

One good thing about being old is that I made all these dumb mistakes a long time ago. Without 50 gazillion people being able to read about my stupidity...

Cools... i feel so much better, but jus one more note:

I did press the gas, and got my speedometer to about 20MPH... and the other wheel still didn't turn?! Is the differential that good at displacing power from one wheel to another?

it will only give power to one tire if there is no traction to be had by either.
