stupid yet somewhat relevent
hey quick stupid question, when cruising at about 60-65 km/h what gear u guys keep ur car in, if going at a constant speed, will keeping the rmp's at about 2500-3000 use less gas than cruising at 3000-3500 rpm? also how high do u rev before shifting into second gear? does this have any effect on gas consumption
thanks
thanks
I'm in 5th Gear when I'm going 60-65mph, and I let my rpms get up to about 3-4k rpms when I shift into 2nd gear, unless I'm at the track, so I'll let it get up to 7400rpms then shift
60-65 km/h? That's about what, 40 MPH? At that speed, I would go into 5th just to save gas (around 2000 rpm). Of course, if I am going uphill and need some extra power, I'd be in 4th and reving about 3000. Remember, lower RPM will always use less gas than higher RPM, no matter which gear you are in.
BTW, I usually shift around 4500 to 5000 just to keep up with the soccer mom in an Odessey
(spelling???). Any tips on how I could shift at lower point and not be a rolling roadblock when the lights turn green?

rpms have a direct effect on gas consumption, as stated above the lower your rpms the less gas you will consume. but to answer your question, if i 'm cruising at any speed i'll try to keep rpms between 2500 and 3500. (with the exception of fifth gear). also when shifting from first to second i'm usually at 4000 to 5000, unless the car is cold, then its lower.
I normally shift gears @ 3000 rpm, and for s-silver: feather your clutch (about 1000 rpm)and gas to find that sweet spot where it has just enough power to engage the gears so you wont roll back and yet not move forward when your at a stop on those hills. When your ready to go all you have to do is apply a little more gas and ease off the clutch and your off. Thats how I do it. peace...
