On and off squeal coming from engine. Mysterious source...
At first I thought it was one of my belts. I've tried belt dressing to tame the sound, but this did not seem to be the source. This isn't a constant sqeal, or a squeal that occurs under acceleration, nor a squeal when the engine is cold. It is an on and off squeal, whether the engine is at idle or through out the rev band. The sound is best described as a squeal, though someone else described it as "metal or something rubbing together". I inspected the belts and I see no visable signs of wear or cracks.
People are constantly staring and pointing and I know it's not because they like my GS-R.
I plan to replace all belts (AC, ALT, PS), timing belt, and H2O pump next month, but I don't want to wait 30 days to see if these were the culprits. Could it be a pully? Belt tensioner? Maybe IT IS a belt?
TIA

i have a underdrive pulleys on and i noticed a squeal when the fan kicks on or turn my lights on, my alternator belt makes a noise from the aluminum pulley. try checking to see how tight the belts are. i am not sure what else to try?? is it posible it is your ac compressor? i supose it could even be the bearings in the ac comp., the alternator, or the ps pump. good luck with it
your problem is solved.
only if i was next to your car. the thing about taking off the belts one by one until you dont hear the sound any more is a waste of time. i would check the tightness of the belts, loose ac belt will squeek like hell when the ac is on but not when the ac is off. why?> cause more load = drag and less friction = slipping of the belts which screams at you to tighten her down. so check the tightness of the belts, im pretty sure its a bit loose.

ChoisVTEC > The belts seem to be tight, and my A/C is never on.
After having a few different heads in my engine bay looking around, many point BELOW the intake manifold thinking that is were the sound is coming from. But with a noise like this, it is rather hard to pinpoint the origin ( the sound seems to bounce off everything). Many don't feel a belt is a problem, but rather a bearing of some type. I also noticed it ALWAYS happens at around 1500 RPMs, and usually under 3000 RPMs.
Someone's advice was to "don't worry until it gets louder". No thanks...
This is driving me nuckin futs.

Is your AC on when this happens? If all the belts are tensioned properly one of your belt driven devices could be crap (e.g. ac compressor).
Mine makes a weird sound too on the same rpm's you've mentioned. Mine is more of like a cricket sound. Only hear when my car is cold, sat for more than 8 hours. Not sure if it's my starter 'cause it started a few days after replacing my clutch and it seems that's where the noise is coming from. After my cars warmed up, it goes away. It's an intermittent problem. I'm still scratching my head at this point...
mine makes a small 'cricket' sound, but only when i'm letting go of the clutch at lower speeds... the dealer said it has to do with when my old clutch broke, it created a few small 'hotspots' on the flywheel?
my is making the "cricket" noise too. sorta sounds like a faint BOV. it happens as i go to shift. any ideas? sounds like its coming from one of my belts.
Well, I dropped by my local Acura Dealer and had them listen to my car squeal. They said MOST LIKELY it is my A/C belt tensioner pully ($50). They claim the bearings in the tensioner pully will break if the owner loves to use A/C. I rarely use my A/C, but I point the finger at the previous owner.
They told me when I change my timing belt to give it a spin and see how it spins, sounds, and feels. If that isn't the problem, it's probably another pully with bad bearings. When swaping out the belts, it's and easy fix.
I plan to replace all belts when I change the timing belt, so I'm thinking of taking a chance and just cutting the A/C belt. The squeal is driving me crazy.

Oh, to be able to drive without AC. . . 104 Degree heat makes that a sweaty affair. . . I wish I lived where you live.
