I don't know what a "brake shield" is but judging by your username I'm assuming you have a GSR motor in your Civic. The 94+ Integra GSR exhaust manifold is infamous for breaking inside the A pipe, thus causing a rattling between 3 and 4 grand.
Mine occurs at 3400.

That might be it. I only have the rear part of the sheild on. man I need a header for it but I dont really care I hope to be going SOHC style in a minute
i have that same thing on my b16a3 del sol. i have a header and exhaust and im assuming it might be the cat that has broken apart. i checked all the fittings for everything but its still there. try checking your cat for stuff to break. i know carsounds are infamous for that happening.
and yes i have the same problem...it sounds like its in the cat. but i know its not. cause my cat is hollowed out....its been annoying me and ive tooken it to so many muffler shops and they cant do **** about it either.

Like I said before, if you have narrowed down that the heat shields are not the source of the rattling, it's generally the OEM exhaust manifold A pipe that needs to be replaced. It's even an Technical Service Bulliten (TSB) on http://www.alldata.com.

I had that problem before and it ended up being a washer. The bolt was loose causing the washer to move freely and make a rattle noise.
Try looking for any loose bolts, around where the area occurs.

Its the cat hitting the heat shield. I have the same noise at the same RPM range. I put my car on a lift and while my friend was giving it gas I stuck a sock between the cat and the heat shield and the noise dissapeard. Seeing how a sock can be somewhat flamable, i took it out and the noise cam back.

hehehe..

O.K. Here's the deal. I too have a GSR motor in a 97 coupe. Tonight after work I had a brain fart. I drilled a hole in both downpipes on my manifold. I then welded them up, welding the inner pipe to the outside of the manifold. Boom..........rattle gone. Just a thought, since now it is a proven fact that it is the down pipe of the manifold. Hope this helps!!!! L8er!!!
