u'll be stripping a lot of tar then.

i'd do all the basics. carpet, tar, firewall mat, all panels including doors and roofliner.

I like a comfortable car.....I don't want a tin box. This is my daily driver. Full interior (Spare included), carpet, all seats (Even baby seat).

2200 without my fat ***.

 

I have a 92 si also and I am in the process of gutting the pig. I have all the carpet out now and I'm getting some dry ice tommorow to remove the tar. Then I will put my carpet back in, just because I don't like having big spots with just primer on the floor.

 

about how much weight can I remove by getting rid of the tar? Is it worth it. What are some downfalls of doing it?

 

is it true that the 92 si is the lightest out of the 92-95 hatches? cause i know the later models like the 95 si comes with rear speakers and a lot of other extra stuff

 

I have a 94 Si hatchback and i feel your pain. I took my tar out, i didnt weigh it but it seemed to be abotu 25lbs Total. It looks like *** w/ the tar out, b/c my car is black, and under the tar is a light gray, so theres big gray spots from where the tar used to be. I put the carpet back in over it and i dont really notice a difference. I hate gutting my car, if i do it, its only at the track and it all goes back in as soon as i get home.
I plan on putting my car back to stock and gettting a CX, DX, VX so i can be faster. The Si has been fun and i will miss its creature comforts but i will love finally being light.
BTW--when i gutted my car, no backseats, no pass. seat, no spare. It weight 2430lbs WITHOUT me!! My car is one heavy ****!!

I have a 92 si/ h22a. it is 2260 with out me in it. I took out the spare and all seats except for the driver seat. I also had just over a 1/2 tank of gas. I did remove the a/c and p/s when I did the engine swap though.

 

93 Si, no A/C, P/S, Power doors/windows, no back seats, gutted rear. I haven't gotten around to weighing her but she "feels" light.

 

My SI weighted 2640 with me in it. I weight 210.

im sorry but strippin an si of all its comforts and the tar etc is a waste, if you want to be light from the start get a cx or soemthing, why strip an si, there already rare enough to find let alone finding one that someone took the things out of it that make it an si

 

I'd honestly ask you why you're doing this first...

If it's to be faster on the streets, then you're wasting your time and effort, not to mention trahsing your car.

If you are actually going to track this car, on an actual race track...Then get to work.

well put. The most I am going to do for weight reduction is..

Lost my rear sub, spare, rear seats, ac.

 

I only took out the rear seats and carpet, left all the panels, it's still a good daily driving CX, plus No peeps in the back seat.

now that's true dedication.......i hope it's not your daily driver

 

i understand that the cx is lighter than an si but i thought that was just from the sunroof and power accesories, they are the same frame and chasis right, so if someone has an SI and they want to gut it why do people tell them to buy a cx?

i dont get it??

Si chassis code is EH3..the rest are EH2..so different chassis to support the moonroof weight and not flex. we also have a bigger gas tank than cx,vx. there is alot of **** that is different..but 2400+ cars, damn...i dont think mine weighs that damn much.

 

just save and gets some more mods, or go on a diet.

 

My old Si weighed 2289lbs. with full interior, GS-R front brakes, Type R engine/tranny swap, 15'' Rotas, and spare tire removed.

A/C, P/S, and cruise were also deleted too. All glass, steel stock hood, no sort of weight reduction except for what's listed.

Sorry, but I have hard time believing claims of under 2200lbs. with full interior. This was also the lighter 1992-1993 model with only one airbag.

By the way, removing tar as a means of weight reduction is a waste of time.

You will save 10lbs. at most and go through hell and make the inside look like **** in the process unless you get it all repainted inside.

I'd look into first and foremost:

Carbon fiber hood
Lightweight battery (11.5lbs. vs. 31lbs.)
Real FAL lexan hatch glass (and remove the rear wiper motor combo)
Lighter wheels

Then if you're hardcore try removing:

Moonroof tracks and motor
Replace moonrof glass with c/f piece
Stereo and speakers
Firewall mat
A/C
P/S and do it right by swapping in a non-P/S rack
Windshiled washer fluid tank
Rear seats
Windshield wiper motor and arms

You could also remove the bumper supports, but I personally would not do this and I don't recommend it.

Remember though that what ever you do to an Si you can do to the CX/VX/DX and STILL be lighter.

We have a lot of topics about this already, so I'll probably end up locking this one down because it's been covered so many times before.

 

i just see no point in gettin an si and takin out p/s a/c, cruise etc unless the only reason your getting an si is for the moonroof ( why though if you want it light) or if you want a stock black hatch...

personally thats one of the main reasons i bought both of my si hatchs is that there black and i love the color and rareness of a black hatch

Wow, back from the dead.

My 92 Si w/ a GSR swap weighs 2280 w/o me in it. That's fine for me... I'm not trying to be the fastest little ricer on the block; YMMV.

I like my moonroof and power steering is nice for autocrossing.

A/C was dead when I bought it, so I deleted it.
