stock LS going bit over 5000RPM
this is Dniedacess' b/f. anyway ive been noticing that i started driving more aggressively ever since i decided to get my turbo kit. well ive been taking my motor way up to 5000 rpm...what harm does that do to the stock motor? or is it made to go that high...and even higher?
I'm sorry but did you say 5000 RPM? Taking it past 5000 RPM occassionally will not hurt your motor. The redline is 6800 RPM for an LS and you're still way below that. Then again, how much boost are you making?
Dude, chill out! You're going past 5k on the street? What if you hurt someone driving reckless like that?
To answer you're question in a ls you'll need to build the top and bottom end in addition to having a crank girdle. Hope this helps.

Um. I hit 9k everyday. You wouldnt have a problem if you hit 6800 multiple times a day. Dont worry about going 5k+ man - these motors were made for it.
holy sh@$ 9k!! i never hit above 4000 cuz i get scared to hear my motor that loud...and i thought 5k was extreme. but i guess its made for it. both me and my g/f crossed over from civics to tegs and old habits die hard. my old d16's just crap
uh....you don't have a c5 corvette- 5k is "OK". it's sometimes "OK" to rev a little high. If you don't hit the "red" on your tach- most likely you will be "OK". If you have the fuel and the right management system- hell take it to 6800 and then you will know what turbo is.
oh yeah- hopefully your engine is built for the boost if not..lol

i heard from different turbo dealers that LS motor can safely take up to 6 psi. and my civic was turbo'ed so i know a thing or two about turbo set-ups...this post was about my stock LS handling high RPM

LS block can hold 6 psi no problem. And can hit 6700 no problem.
When I had stock cams and valvetrain I hit 8100 all day. Of course, now we are @ 9k
These motors make max power near redline for a reason - they are made to rev there. Do it
This is not only "not bad" for the motor - its good for it. Cleans out the carbon deposits.

wow thats cool...thanx for the great info...now i wont be scare to push my car toomuch. (my definition of "push" means 5500~6000rpm)
I hit 6900rpms a good amount, and have been also throwing about 8lbs of compressed air from the massive turbo in there while hitting those rpms... and I don't even have standalone yet and my baby still loves me
The LS rev limiter is 7200 rpm and I hit it all the time. My car just hit 100k miles last night, about 62k of them are with my abuse, and it's still running great. It has also seen lots of racing (real racing, not just 1/4 mile), which makes my daily abuse look like nothing.

Stock valve train on an LS, most start to die off past 5400 RPM's.. By that I mean the TQ starts to drop, then engine is still fine. I took mine to 6500-7000 alot for 140K miles, when I replaced it was still going strong.

Why would you want to rev to the limiter? Your HP/TQ plummet dramatically after redline. Unless you've upgraded past the normal bolt-ons, you're just putting extra stress/wear on your engine.
Now, to adress the topic of the thread: Yes, it's totally fine to take it to redline, but keep in mind that your putting more stress/wear on your engine than you normallly would.
Performance always comes at a cost.

you think old habits die hard? I come from driving a Turbo Diesel and an LT1 chevy with 3200 and 5000 redlines respectively... man I thought I was haulin a$$ and my friends would all laugh at me for shifting at 5800... took me about 2 weeks to shake that, now I STILL cant shift past 7800 when im really trying to push it
