4g tranny
Allright you guys, I need some help. I took out my 4g si's tranny for the clutch install and I am having problems getting the tranny back in...the thing is, there are alot of clearance issues gettin it up in there to line it back up. I can't just pull it straight because it will not go, and if I pull it crooked, it won't line up at all. I've never worked with this before, but I didn't want to pay a shop buttloads of money to install a clutch either. So my question is, is there a trick to this? What is the easiest way to get my tranny to line up so I can bolt it back on?
It may help that you know that alot of my suspension has been taken off to solve some of the clearance problems...any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

im not sure how your doing it , wether you have a lift or a tranny jack or what. but when i did mine i first got the tranny on a peice of wood then put that on a jack and then slowlly jack it up. if your having clearence issues you might not have taken everything off you should have . but the key is to go slow and use a jack. i did my clutch on a 4g vtec and it took alittle bit to get it up there but it will go. good luck
ya try to get it on the jack so its strait. also the input shaft grooves have to line up w/the groves in the engine. i had it as close to the block as posssible and got a long bolt on top and bottom. make it snug, but you dont want to break anything so not to tight. then turn the engine over by hand so it clicks into place. once in, and in gear you should be able to look into where the axel goes and see it turning. then just tighten up in a chris-cross patteren.
I have the tranny on an engine hoist, because we don't have a tranny jack...however, that wasnt' very stable so we added a floor jack underneath to stabilize it. It is up by where it needs to go, but needs to be rotated so I think someone a little stronger than me needs to get under it and turn it enough to where we can get a few long bolts in like suggested. I guess I am doin ok so far, Thanks guys!
that's funny, cause with my bros lude(it was my two bros and me) we tried putting it in with the jack as you all did, but it was harder than hell.. so we went over to pick up a friends picker and we got it in in about 10 minutes. try it that way, rope it up, or chain it up where it's even and it'll slide in like a glove. hope that helps
i found it easier to take out the engine and tranny altogether and then do the work needed and put it back.. takes alot less time.. you would think it would take more.. but it takes about 30 minutes +/- to get the engine out then you dont havve to worry about clearence problems when working with the tranny
When i did my clutch, it took me 4-6 hours of F**king with that damn thing to get it to go in right. It is a really tight fit and if you don't get it in strait its sucks. Good Luck

Well guys, 4 weeks later (workin only one day a weekend on it) the tranny is finally in!! Just have to put the rest of it back together and the lude will be back in action!!! Thanks for all the input, it helped!!
im going to be taking my tranny out soon, are there any good step by step instructions online i can peep? anyone have any links? i remember reading a writeup on a clutch install a while back, maybe it was at hp.com....
thanks
thanks
I'll tell you exactly how to do it. I did this recently.
You said youre using an engine hoist....do this. Chain the front of the tranny about 6 inches shorter than the rear so that when the hoist lifts it it picks up the front of the tranny first. The problem are the damn studs for the tranny mount. If you do what I said it will clear and you can wiggle it in. So like I said, chain the front of the transmission about 6 inches shorter than the rear so the hoist picks it up with the front higher than the rear. This will give you more clearance for those studs and you should be able to get it in. IM me on aim if you need more help.

That's what i've done a few times. It also helps if you attach a chain to it (on the top of the tranny)...that way the guy above can also support some of the load, while u align it, etc.
