Default 400 HP

I really want to make a statement with my lude. I want at least 400 HP. I want to be able to roll up and smoke a new Z06. I want to turbo my H22A. I will replace all my internals with what ever you guys suggest i have about $8500 to spend on my engine. Can anyone help me lead me in the right direction and is it possible to do with that amount of cash?

use the search option, must of the turbo guy here have posted their set-up and what their car is putting out. 8500 should be enought to get you a good set-up by going custom.

You will never smoke a zo6, those things will outperform anything you do to your car by miles.

I dont know about all that, i think if you had a prelude with a built motor, and you were running high psi you could take one.

Oh, you can beat him, but lets see what you both end up with:

The guy with the Z06 has a damn fast car without messing with it, and it's worth whatever in stock condition. Plus he gets more girls.

You're car will take 100s of hours to finish, you'll spend way more money then you've budgeted, and it won't be "Honda reliable." Strictly speaking, what youve built is no longer a Honda. And, after all that, even including all the go-fast parts, it'll be worth practically NOTHING. Ever try selling a turbo'd car?

How much does a used Z06 go for? How much are you REALLY going to spend. Add that to what a Prelude costs. Think about it.

If you're comfortable with all that, more power to you, but don't be surprised if, after beating the Z06, you wonder if it was all worth it, and why didn't you just buy a used one...

i don't know about all that now guys........

UNTUNED, running 11psi, i kept up with a Z06, now, with my new setup, and being tuned, i am gonna make some middle aged guy that thinks we are just kids and our Hondas are just toys, go home and never want to be seen again in public

BTW, in case anyone is interested, i DO have a GReddy turbo kit i will be selling at a damn good price, you just gotta PM me, and i cna give you details (lower than the price stated in my FS add)

Don't take this the wrong way, but 1. you're gonna need to drop a coin big enough to pay for an ivy league education, 2. you're going to blow your motor, and 3. it's all be for nothing b/c you'll NEVER have the equivilent traction that a car like a z06, 360 modena, etc. will have; our cars simply WEREN'T made, engineered or destined to be supercars, period. You may "make" 400hp, but there's NO WAY you'll get it all to the ground, much less make use of it; unless you and the guys at Renault F1 are talking about custom traction control, a piddly quaife isn't going to rodeo all those ponies; especially in anything a hair shy of full race trim; i.e., insane clutch and pressure plate, lsd, slicks, etc. and can you even imagine the lag in turbo sufficently large to generate oh 20-22psi of pressure?

I commend you for your enthusiasm, really, but it's not gonna happen, man. Sure, you may get a 400 hp prelude, but what'll it be good for? A wall filled with framed dyno charts?

PS- my prelude (5th gen) has been able to fend of z06's (at road courses) w/ a meager 170hp and 140 tq to the wheels, and 100k miles on the clock; though, I can't speak to the other drivers "motivation." Food for thought.

PPS- If you really wanna play the game, trade in your prelude on an early 91-93 NSX, add a Basch / used CT blower, headers, and taitec exhaust and go to town. Now that would give a z06 a run for it's money.

Actually, if he gives it any though at all, it'll be, "hum, pretty fast, wonder how long his motor will last."

once i ever get it properly tuned, i will have no problems, and will still last longer than you think, i am worried about the turbo going out before the engine gives

Its all about the tuning and the quality of the work. If done right i think it could be reliable and last.

Actually on the subject of traction control....

A company named Racelogic makes a nice looking system...

http://www.racelogic.co.uk/tc-brief.htm

The RX-7/Supra boards had a group buy a few months ago....and they also had some members review it. All I can say is....the reviews are impressive. Check it out here-

http://www.rx7club.com/forum/s...ber=1

I for one would like to see the honda boards try and get a similar group buy sometime....wicked stuff, and a good price IMO.

As far as making that kind of power....what year and setup Prelude do you have? Ie 94 Vtec, 96 Vtech, 01 Sh, 99 Vtech etc....will make a difference in kits available. I honestly dont think that $8500 will get you very far towards 400hp.

If you have a 97 or newer prelude, heres a good starting point IMO to that 400hp, assuming your budget can stretch a bit, this list is also far from complete, off the top of my head. I tried to avoid tons of custom jobs (ie sc/turbo), and as this sounds like his daily driver, nos, and trubo (im not a huge fan of it, but I'll claim reliability as a weak excuse) are out imo, as is super high compressions (requiring race fuel etc), and some of the more extreme things.

JRSC Supercharger kit - around $3k
AEM CAI (cold air intake)- around $200
Kamikaze Header (has a 2.5" collector if i recall)- around $500
into a 3" exhaust w/high-flow cat (i can point you towards some custom 3" exhaust (mandrel bent), custom carsounds 2.5" intake to 3" exit, thermal 3" muffler)- around $500
Clutch Masters Stage 3 Clutch w/alum fly- around $500
AEM ECU- around $1k
RJ Engineering Injectors- around $300
Aeromotive Fuel Press Regulator/Filter/etc- dunno for sure
Fuel Rail- around $100
Fuel Pump- dunno for sure
Supercharger improvement by Endyn- around $1.5k
MSD Ignition Crap- dunno for sure

That is the short work list for sure, not including installs, dyno testing and ECU tuning. I also left out some simple performance mods like pulleys, etc. The JRSC supercharger puts out ok power, but not stellar so....the Endyn modification will bring the psi it can produce from about 9-12psi (if that), to 14-16 psi or so. The other modifications will all net hp gains....but even then hitting 400hp will be a bear. Also don't forget that doesnt cover getting the power to your wheels (ie bigger wheels/tires is only so effective)....you will need to seriously look into a quaife lsd (limited slip diff), it runs around $900, and I would also consider the above-mentioned Traction Control system for another $1300 or so.

This is all assuming stock internals can handle the boost. Add another $5k-6k$ for a full PROFESSIONAL resleeve/pistons/head work etc...ie Endyn and a few others. On the otherhand you will gain hp there as well.

You will achieve respectible performance (and reliability as a daily driver) with $8500.....given a stock JRSC supercharger, bolt-ons (intake, header, exhaust), fuel system upgrades, ECU upgrade, and ignition upgrade. But making that leap to 400hp....is expensive.

Now if you have a 92-96 Prelude, youre outa luck on most turbo/supercharger setups without going into custom kits ($$), if you do not have a VTECH engine, you are also looking at more (around $2.4k not including install) for a swap (tho some will disagree, starting with a VTECH is more power, and easier performance part shopping).

I know people have their own opinions on routes to take, this would be mine, were I lucky enough to have $8.5k available. As it is I am getting ready to start my swap, and am buying some parts (SMSP header, AEM ECU atm) to prepare for custom SC or mild NA buildup in the long haul.

GL~

Im sorry to ruin your day, but you'll need more then $8500 to obtain your goal. You have no clue what you are about to get yourself into, do some research, learn about turbo's and how they work, learn about standalone engine management systems, and learn from the countless mistakes of others so they wont happen to you. Everyone and their mother wants 400whp, but a 400 whp front wheel drive car is useless on the street. And reliability? I hope you have another car. I have yet to hear of a 400whp+ car run for ages and ages and NEVER encounter a problem. Ok im a hypocrite because i have a car that can achieve this easily, but i did not build my car to make a statement with my car. If i had a tiny *****, then yes maybe i would. Do you plan on having a shop do the work for you or do you know how to build motors yourself? Here's a little breakdown of things you'll need (yes i know you can get away with some things for cheaper, but not if you want it done right the first time):

Basic Turbo kit $3500 - note how i said basic
Intank fuel pump $150
RC 550cc's $400
Fuel Rail $125
Steel braided fuel lines $600
Earl's Fittings $100
EMS $600-$1200
Pistons + Rods $800-$1100
Sleeved Block $800
OEM parts for motor assembly $600 -bearings,gaskets,etc,etc
ARP Head studs $150

This puts you at roughly $7725-$8625

The list doesnt stop there:

Boost Controller $400
Gauges $200
Ignition and coil $300-400
Headwork + Cams $1500 -lets assume you go with gude
Tuning $300-500

Now you are up to $10425-11625. This is IF you plan on doing EVERYTHING yourself by the way minus the headwork, sleeving your block, and tuning. As far as labor issues, you are looking at around 2500-5000 depending on what kind of shop you have do your work. Yes you might be able to get away with not doing headwork and maybe a few other things, but doing it right the first time is cheaper then doing it again for the 2nd and 3rd times. I forgot to even mention an exhaust system and several other things, but i think you get the point. We're not trying to talk you out of your project, we are just letting you know what lies ahead. Always expect the unexpected and always plan on spending more money then you originally anticipate to. Good luck.

400hp? Easy. Why doesn't someone give me a challange here?

-Take your block, have it bored and sleeved to 89mm.
-Run JE or Arias 9.0:1 compression pistons
-Crower Rods, or Eagle rods (either one)
-Have your entire rotating assembly balanced and blueprinted by a respectable shop.
-Have some good headwork done, I recommend just sending your head to Portflow, and tell them that you want the works, P&P, valves, springs etc. It'll cost you $2k or something close to it, but whatever, you'll need it.
-Buy a used turbo kit (Fmax or drag) and as many goodies as you can get with it (boost controller etc), sell off the turbo, manifold, wastegate, and intercooler
-buy a nice manifold, a nice wastegate, a bigger turbo, and a bigger FMIC.
-Get a standalone. Hondata if you want easy, AEM or something comparable if you want just plain nice.
-Get fuel: 750CC injectors, walbro fuel pump (340+), AEM fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator. etc.
-Clutch, pressure plate, lightened flywheel
-LSD if you plan on taking off fast
-driveshaft shop axles if you plan on keeping it together.

There are plenty of other things I can tell you to get or do, but that should keep you busy enough for a few weeks.

Or you could just give me your car and $8500 and I'll give you back a Prelude that is worthy of eating Vipers whole in about a month or two.

Think outside of the box.

There is a way for every budget. You just have to be creative about your solutions.

It can be done with 8500, all you have to do is pick some real good deal around here. your stuff doesn't have to be brand new. Just take your time research on the way you can get to 400hp with different set-ups i.e. turbo kit , supercharger. The problems that you must likely will encounter along your way and the way you can prevent this problem from becoming money pits. Is just going to take time, research and alot of patience to get there and have a reliable car.

There are no SC kits for a 4th gen true (that im aware of).....

There is a person who was working with JRSC at one point at modifying a kit to work on the 4th gen. My guess is a good shop can duplicate his work. Or you can talk to him yourself (Caz from hpoa.org).

What do you mean nobody has a VTECH? =P

In all honesty, going through the right channels, getting used parts that are good, and getting the proper new parts, it can be done for that amount.

And in fact, 400whp is enough to take out a LOT of cars and make a SERIOUS statement.

i don't think it's a good idea to turbo preludes. I mean, they got aluminum blocks that aren't so reliable with turbos. I would suggest not spending money on building up a turbo-lude, because in the end it won't be so reliable and it will have problems and take a hell of alot of money.
If i was to build up a turbo car, I'd have a good base such as a 300ZX, 240 SX SR20DET, WRX, or many others.. because they are made for turbo.
Well, that's just my suggestion. But good luck with your Prelude; hopefully you won't have too many problems.
