Exceeds Mechanical Limits Title. What does it mean? Urgent!
The CRX I am going to look at tonight (7:30 pm 5/15) has an Exceeds Mechanical Limits Title. The details for the title say that it is for vehicles with odometers that can not accurately record mileage after 99,999 miles, but the CRX can. Why would it have this? Also, this title was issued back in Jan. of 93 (the CRX is a 90) when the car had only 4,8xx miles. What is going on? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

the reason thewy have those "exceeds mechanical limits titles is because a long time ago before i was born cars only had odometers that went up to 100K. If one car is affected by the rule they all have to be. The reason that car has that tiel is it might have been a salvage rebuild in which case it has exceeded it mechanical limits. At least that is what i think why they have those.
Thanks for the info. However, the car does not have a salvage title or any report of an accident, so I don't believe it has been rebuilt. Anybody have any more info?
Thanks in advance,

It just means that the car's odometer reading has exceeded the limits of the numbers... which MOST honda's should never do because they have a million mile Odometer.
For instance. My mustang "rolls over" at 99,999.9 miles. When it reaches 100,000, it reads all 0's, no 1. That would exceed the mechanical limits of the odometer.
To this day I wonder if my Mustang has 95k or 195k miles on it.
[edit] after re-reading you rpost, maybe the sotck gauge cluster died or was stolen, and therefore the original ACTUAL milage was unknown? [/edit]

Actually i think theres a seperate option for that on the title. I think it says something like "Not Actual Mileage-reading reported is not the true/accurate mileage for the vehicle". So i have no idea how he got the Mechanical Limit thing unless they filled out the title wrong

Yeah I agree with Sir Kid. I think that the odometer was messed with (or broken??)and that way it protects anyone that was selling ti in case it was found out that the mileage was not accurate. Kind of like when you buy a car that is over a certain amount of years old (in Wisconsin its 10 years) but under the mileage they can put exempt since it no longer matters with a car that old. I wouldnt worry about it if its got no accidents and an otherwise clean title.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the car and everything looked to be in excellent shape, except the altezzas, easy to replace tho. Most important, the car is rust free!!! Impossible to find in the midwest (well, nearly impossible).

two of my latest civic beaters had that branded on the titles also. an 86 and 88, both of which had half a million owners..... and miles
THe reason a title may not yet have been issued is that when the dealer has the car there is no title. It was probably driven with dealer plates until 93, and then sold to someone. It finally got a title then, after accumulating the 4800 miles.
I know someone who has exploited this, he had a WS-6 Trans-Am delivered to his dad's dealership and he got a dealer plate from his dad. He has been driving it for quite awhile now with just that plate. He does not have to pay insurance (covered under dealership policy) and if he were to sell the car, whoever bought it would be the original owner.
