I drain my oil usually for 15-20 minutes, change the filter, put the car back on the ground, then put in the new oil. 4 even quarts always brings the level to just a hair above the top hole on the dipstick, so therefore I only use 4 quarts exactly.

Yep, same here.

I use 4 quarts as well. Even with discrepencies in draining it, 3 will not be sufficient. Either way check the dipstick as that will be a sure indicator.

That is my techinque, BUT....
One thing many ppl forget to do is to pour some oil into the new filter before installing it. I usually fill it up, let it "soak in," and fill it up again before putting it on. That way, the chances of starting the engine "dry" is diminished. Plus, it is a good way to put in that extra 0.2 qts of oil.

In the past 5 years of changing my own oil I have never put any oil in the filter and I have never had any problems. Even after running my engine (so oil circulates through the filter), if I come back and check the oil the next day, the level will still be up to the top hole or a hair above.

Putting oil in the filter is a un-known. There isn't any facts to back up either side. But IMO, it takes 2 seconds to dump a little oil in there. Call that cheap insurance. If nothing else you just added 2 seconds to your oil change with no harm being done otherwise.
