An orbital buffer lessons the chance of burning the paint , But it does not eliminate it from happening. Make sure when using any type of buffer that you keep it moving around and don't keep it on one spot, You will burn the paint if you leave it in one spot for more than a couple seconds. Hope this helps!

Well since a random orbital does not spin, but rather just oscillates back and forth in a random motion, it would be pretty difficult to burn the paint.
Yeah you can burn the paint. My car got detailed and they burnt through some of the paint on the ridges where the trunk/hatch meets the body of the car. Just be careful.
