Default LSD (limited slip diff) is it worth it?

after the upgrade to LSD (ITR) on your tranny have you noticed any difference in daily driving? auto-x? or even drag?

did it improve your 1/4 mile times? winter driving?
all together was it worth it?
need some opions, will most likley go with a ITR LSD ?

I ran a couple road courses with the R tranny on my GSR and the LSD is SWEET! The added traction is well worth it for the track and the streets, especially aggressive cornering! Get it, or if you can spare the extra, find an R LSD tranny. The shorter gearing is great too!

When I had my Hybrid EG out on the track without the LSD, the inside tire would spin like mad in tight bumpy corners. The next time out on the same track with the LSD, the power could be applied almost full on without much wheel spin. The car feels like it actually tightens towards the apex when on the throttle on certain corners.

Hi,

LSD for our FWD cars is a wonderful thing. I think any LSD will help for autox, road course, or handling in general.

I do not think that the ITR LSD (Torsen type?) works when the wheels are straight. In other words, it would not help your traction for launching say at the drag strip. Any truth to this?

I have a KAAZ LSD (clutch type) and the car and LSD are still breaking in (very loudly), but I think it's supposed to be better for providing traction when launching.

Thoughts?

Hell yes... it's so nice to get on it at a light and being able to get some sort of traction when you have some power behind it... turns are so much nicer, since the car has less tendancy to push in corners (feels that way anyway) and leaving TWO black streaks on the pavement is wonderfull when a mustang does it, and you want to front!!!

I have the quaife LSD and it works great!!

best mod you can get imho

HOLY CRAP YES indeed.
I put my ITR LSD in about a month ago, and the difference on an autox course is amazing, I can pull out of corners instead of having to slow down to regain balance and regroup the cars weight and not understeer.
Durign street driving it lets me pull thru corners nice and quietly instead of the old screeching tire cornering.

fantastic.
very good mod, and at around $450 for used ITR LSD's its well worth it.

quaife and kazz are the best ones... replace the clutch and splurge... your only gonna buy this once hopefully, so spend a little extra and get the best!!! this way you might not have to do it twice...

For streetability go with the R or Quaiffe LSD. The Kaaz will always chatter on turns even after break-in. That's the nature of a clutch type LSD though. Fro daily driving the Quaiffe anbd R LSD's are great. Out of those two the Quaiffe is probably the better and more durable choice, from what I have learned/read. Plus, since they dropped the prices it is a smarter buy.

However, if you can get an R tranny for about $1200, get the tranny. The shorter gearing alone make it worth it's wait in gold for N/A applications. This way, since you'll have to take out the tranny for the clutch job it'll be easy to install the new tranny. Good luck!

now lets say i get the R trans and its in and all,,then i get the vortec SC,,how much will the shorter gearing hurt my perfomance?????

i guess i could always go back to my GSR trans and replace the clutch

do u think the R trans will help in the qtr??how much time off the qtr??

thanks

i figured if i did need a clutch i would just wait till a good used R trans would pop up,,or even shell out the money for a new one,,dont they run around 1500 $$ new,,does that include the clutch and LSD too??

thanks mike

If you get the Vortech and with the amount or power you gain you'd run out of gears, meaning that since the gearing is shorter you will hit the redline very quickly and your top speed will suffer. Longer gearing will definitely be better for higher power engines. I've seen turbo guys use an LS tranny with an LSD. So that is an option for you. But if you get the R tranny now, you can alsways sell it for a good price later on down the road if you don't like it with the SC.

With a new R tranny it comes with the LSD but generally you'll need to buy a new clutch seperately.

$1000 - $1200 for a good used R tranny seems to be the norm. New will run up to $2000, I think. Not sure. I got my R tranny used for $1200 with about 4k miles on it.

Here's what I did:

I got a brand new USDM ITR tranny, and swapped to the KAAZ LSD and JDM FD.

Keep in mind I'm still in break-in, but honestly it's already apparent that the car is a beast. If you stay all motor, IMHO, shorter gearing is one of the best mods to improve perf. I'm sure it hurts mileage and is a PITA on the hwy, heh.

The KAAZ feels really aggressive, like it's contributing a LOT. I actually get TQ steer reminiscent of my old Ford Probe GT under boost. It's finally breaking in better, so I can drive in town without getting embarrassed.

I just can't express how sweet the gearing is, but my ITR tranny with JDM FD may be a little extreme for most people.

However, as Gee said, if you are going FI I would stay away from the close ratio gearing. I can't even imagine what a turbo Honda feels like, where you can't take advantage of tight gearing cause it's too powerful, hehe. Must be a nice problem.

Take care,

I've got 12,000 miles on my KAAZ LSD now, and, its fully broken in now. It doesn't make any noise.

I'm not going to be in denial fellas...I'm addicted to my LSD!!!

berkel, I had no idea you were getting so many mods into your sedan!!!
NICE.
I bet its a beast on the road, eating up many unsuspecting stretches of twisties!!!!!!

yeah , to answer for prices...
used ITR trannies around 1000+
new clutch packages around 300+ oem
around 400+ for aftermarket.

for FI you will need longer gears up top.. LS tranny with LSD and special gearing.

Ya, even more impressive when you factor in the fact that we both have 97's with the JDM front end and both going the Mugen everything route here in Toronto!

I have a JDM 98 Spec R tranny with a 9lb flywheel and Clutch Specialties Stage2 clutch and it makes a HUGE difference. Numbers aside, the car is much more fun to drive. RPMs only drop 2k between shifts and few cars can keep up accelerating around corners with me now. It's my favorite mod to date.
