I’ll start with the story that leads me to my question.

Last night my friend and I were about to exit my car to go into a store. I was opening my door and noticed that is was strong windy outside. I mentioned it to my friend that she be careful, no problem (she knows how paranoid I am). As we are exiting my car the driver of the car next to us, is approaching his car (parked to my right). We get about one metre away from my car and hear DING. I go over the look at the damage, a nice red mark about two centimetres in height, located near the passenger side mirror has now added a little more colour to my white door. Luckily (and I use this term loosely) there was the slightest of indentation, you have to look at it from an angle to see the impression and in about one minute I was able to remove the red mark.

So my question is – How far have you gone when you have caught someone who dinged your door? Did you force them to pay for the repair?

 

I'm still waiting to catch someone.

 

dude, its just a ding, i wish my car only had a little ding here and there. just learn to live with it.

I caught some asian girl at school, she parked maybe 6 inches away from my passenger side fender, she backed in teh parking spot, and im walking to my car, looking at her trying to park, and let me tell you, she was struggling like ****. but anyways, she finally parks, and opens the door...BAMMMM, straight into my fender. I stop. she gets out goes to her trunk. I start walking to my car again, and walk up to my trunk. I say to her,

me: "thanks for the new ding you gave me"
her: "i dont know what you are talking about"
me: "i just saw you open the door and hit my fender, go take a look"
her: "i didnt do anything, i dont know what you are talking about"
me: "so you're saying i was dreaming when i saw you hit my car"
her: "like i said i didnt do anything, and if i did, you cant prove it"
me: "true, but you'll pay for it"

end of convo....let me tell you, she payed for it alright...use your imagination

I don't mind little dings...I am more concerned of not getting a BIGGER ding while driving. As long as you didn't do it purposely, just apologize and I'll let go of it.

 

Some lady in an MDX dinged my car badly, and I waited outside to get her info. I just did it to scare her though, I never actually turned it in or anything.

I was though.

 

I am very **** about **** like this. That's why I park a mile away and walk..

 

It's pretty inevitable that you are going to get some door dings in any public parking lot. ESPECIALLY when it is very windy. Some people are careless; some just have an 'oops' every now and again. I know I have dinged doors unintentionally, and I know I have saved a few doors from slamming into other cars due to the crazy wind.

If you SEE the person do it, I'd say something.
But a simple door ding is not a big deal, I'd be more inclined to only have a scratch or chipped paint get repaired. Who cares? dings happen. Paint chips/scratches on the other hand, that shows someone just didn't care.

 

I'm **** about dings too..I don't have any on my ITR yet. But man, you should of seen my Corolla...there was like 8 on each side. Finally I called the dent doctor and had them pulled out.

I've never caught anyone, but I would make a big deal if I did. But how can you make someone pay legally? I think you need to take matters into your own hands.

Funniest thing I seen related to dings - somebody had scratched into the side of a lady's new Volvo wagon "THANKS FOR DINGING MY DOOR". Sweet revenge. Sweet revenge.

 

the best thing to do is have the person open the door again and see if it lines up perfectly with the new ding, of course , a fresh ding will also have a tad bid of paint, they cant rely deny it at this point, this happened to me and i did what i said and took $100, you probably have to be some what intimidating i guess, i think i am somewhat decent at intimidating haha but usually im

If you saw somone do it, I would try my hardest to get that person to pay for it. Obviously, its inevitable that dings will occur, but theres no reason to let someone get away with it if you see it actually occur. I'm really **** about things like that, so I always get any dings fixed when I see them.

I have only had 2, and I would say thats pretty good for owning the car for 3 years.

 

All of the dings/dents my car has acquired have come from my brother bumping into it while walking in and out of the garage.

Do I make him pay for it? No.

I do not think it is worth the hassle and resentment that it will leave behind.

I do <u>accidentally</u> reverse the truck into his car sometimes though.

my car was keyed, about 6inchs long. Caught the guy and went to court. He ended up paying $2300 cash to paint the WHOLE car. Thats what I call justice

Did you know the guy, and what was the reason?

 

dings are a way of life here in manhattan. you see 911's to s500's with dings and bumpers scratched up beyond belief. don't really think of it much these days.

Nice revenge. Even though that is illegal but sometimes when ppl don't know what they have done to other ppl's car and never admit what they did, some sort of action has to be taken. I got a nice big dent on my car after 1 month of my car repainted.

just do what i do. "flat foot their car" so it doesnt hurt your foot and put a crater in their door. i have no tolerance for inconsiderate people. I have never dinged someones door or scratched someones car in my life, and I wish people would do the same for me. It's common courtesy to be even more careful to something that isn't yours.

you're an idiot. first of all, how do you even know it's the same car? what if the person who dinged your pos left and someone else took the spot. Now you come out and kick their door?
