Default Leaking Headgasket??

Hi guys......

I found out my car was leaking oil from the headgasket last week.. ARGH!!
Anyways about 4months ago i had a mishap at the track which required my head to be taken off and new valves etc be put in. At that stage my mechanic said he had a spoon head gasket and asked whether i wanted to wack that in.... of cos i said YES! now the damn thing is leaking......... my question is: is this a consequence of improper installation or defective head gasket? does the head/block require to be machined or anything before installing a head gasket? last but not least...... do you lose compression with a leaking head gasket?

some insight would be appreciated.

Is it leaking at the rear of the head? Backwards installed head gasket leaks at the rear.
