Default Any way to disengage the antenna?

Is there anyway to disengage the antenna just to leave it up, or because of snow and different things, that i could leave it down and still get any to good reception? my brother's antenna on his 94 legend was disengaged before he got it, my motor is grinding, mostly the teeth are not engaging, anybody know how to do this or how much it would cost to do this/ repair it?? thanks!
