Ultimate Street/Strip Tranny ? ? ? ur opinion
ok i bought a LS tranny in need of rebuild. . i have a turbo LS i hard LS trannies are better for turbo appl, but what would u say is the ultimate street /strip tranny im planning on rebuilding this with a LSD. . are there any sick combinations i should consider? PS- i dont want it to be topping out at 120 lol
IMO and many other O's on this board, the LS tranny sucks *** for turbo. Its a common internet/heresay myth that says they are better for boost.
No matter what, turbo, supercharger, NA, you want shorter gearing. The LS is a economy tranny (and we see how they put the LS tranny inside and LS)
Shorter gears are what you want for acceleration. With your LS tranny, you will drop out of boost between shifts more than a shorter geared. Plus you will drop out of your power band which you dont want. Sell that crap and get a GSR, B16 or Type R tranny.

If you dont want to swap gears, G3 GSR is good (I say G3 because the G2 GSR is way different, just like the G2 LS its much different than the G3 LS).
Most are starting to say ITR,
but how often have you heard of traction in 1st, and 2nd from that tranny on the street from stand still?
For Strip: ITR or cable JDM S1 w/ slicks.
Ultimate Street/Strip would be: hybrid GSR/ITR

I thought that the LS 5th gear was to much of a difference when put in a B16 trans. I might be wrong but I always thought that you should put a GSR 5th gear in a B16 and an LS 5th gear in a GSR trans. Anyone know for sure?

My man jeff is a smart man shorter gears and staying in your power range is what you want a b16 tranny losses about 1700 rpm's with a good shift all the others are over 2 a ctr tranny is a hell of a tranny too good luck

everyone is talking about LS 5th gears in this tranny etc...
if im not mistaken, GSR and LS have same gear ratio in 1st and 2nd... why not get a GSR 3rd and 4th.. .save you some money from getting a new tranny...
or can you not use GSR gears in LS trannies? what about b16 gears?

Actually, Geoff, you can.
My tranny consists of a GSR case, GSR final drive, GSR 1/2, B16 3/4, and LS 5th with a Quaife diff.

hmmm interesting. When we were building trannies at gary gardellas last summer i thought we ran into a problem... i cant remember what it was but we were convinced they were diff. thats a badass trans you have tho!
i have a hybrid case right now, half LS half GSR

Yeah I remember that my tranny builder (I dont touch those things) mentioned something about the case not fitting quite right, not sure if he had to make a modification or what, but he got it to work
very interesting, id like to know what he did to make it work. I really cant remember for the life of me but i know when we mocked it all up the general consensus was that they were very different...
i know its not an easy thing then. could you maybe find out?

90-91 A-1 LS tranny =
with me...
I don't know if my gears are stock because I bought it online, but I've got no problems with "falling out of boost" and the 1-2 shift puts the car at aobut 5500 rpm, which the turbo, VTEC, and me likee.

I agree with everyone saying shorter gears better for acceleration regardless of the application but what if your putting down so much power your spinning every gear because its too short? In that case Id want gearing that wasnt so damn useless.
What about handling the power of a turbocharged engine? Will that cause premature wear on a stock transmission? Is there anyway to strengthen the components of the transmission to combat this?
well I just blew my diff. on my b16 and with in *hours I found a ls tranny to hold me off untill I get my b16 trenny rebuilt and put quafe in I will be selling my tranny soon the ls in a month or so untill I get my old one ready. You can never have too short of gears at leat not with slicks

wheel hop and doing a crazy down shift like going 70 shifting to 4th gear but some how hitting 2nd. That is enough to make me cry

since a gsr/ls 1-2nd is the same u want either a gsr or ls 1st and 2nd because in first and second, you are still fighting for traction, u dont want gears that are too short..
with a turbocharged car, u usually find traction in third, u want a b16 3rd, to help u accelerate the quickest when u gain traction...
with 4th gear u want the quick acceleration too....b16 4th gear
u can keep your ls 5th gear for top end runs...
so basically, u want to keep your ls tranny and buy a b16 3rd and 4th gear and get yourself a quaiffe

Go to a bigger/stickier tire, get multi stage boost controller, traction bars, diff, etc. All else the same, a shorter gear will out accelerate a longer one. So don't work backwards. Going to a longer gear to improve traction is like reaching over your shoulder to scratch your ***. Yes, you can do it, but there is a much easier and more effective way of doing it.
