Rookie needs help
Ok guys, I'm completely new to this. I just bought a 98 GSR and decided to jump on the scene. But I'll start out easy. I've had people tell me that my VTEC is not kicking in. How do I know if it is or not and what could be the problems with it? Any help is appreciated
you should easily be able to tell just by driving it. at about 5000 to 5500 rpms you should feel it, a little push back in your seat. If not that you should definently hear it.
but if your new to cars, dont mess under the hood. take it to a shop.
....and welcome to H-T

nah your vtec is kicking in its just not that noticable untill 5750RPMS. with your GSR here is how it works:
4400 - vtec engages
5750 - secondary butterflys open, flowing more air
and thats basically how it works. btw, some people here will yell and bitch at you if you ask simple questions without searching, jus dont take it personally. but yea just type like [ vtec gsr ] and you will get lotsa results. anything that stumps you or what not just post it up here and we will be more than happy to help!

No wonder rumors are started everyday on H-T.

I'm glad to be here. This place is great from what I've seen already. Thanks for the advice. I'll see what it is. I'll give it a good rev and see what happens. or else, a trip to the shop it is.
i dont even notice when the vtec kicks in. u can tell if its working if ur accelerating really hard above 4500 rpms to the redline. i would also assume that some cel would come on to indicate that vtec isnt workin, can someone verify this?

I think it would throw a CEL. There are numerous factors as to whether or not it kicks in though (oil pressure, oil level, and oil temperature. And you have to be driving as well (not in neutral).).

I had a hard time noticing mine when I first got my GSR too. Try taking off the air filter cover on your motor and when your secondaries open up at ~5800 you should hear a nice little growl.
