EUREKA! (Why car mags got shitty 1/4 mile times in ITR)
I was kicking this around in my head, and asked myself this: what could they be doing wrong that your average import driver does right? The answer must be the launch. Most of the fast cars those guys test are fast because they have bigger engines, not 100 hp/liter VTEC motors. Bigger motors need to be launched at lower rpms than our Rs, and with quicker clutch drops than our Rs. The car mags' problems were obviously in the lower stages of the 1320, since their ETs were 15's or lower, but their 0-60s were about 7.0 sec. I bet their 60-ft times really sucked. Anyway this is just what I concluded by myself. If any of you drag studs have other ideas I am all ears.
dont know about the magazines in the states... but here they test cars with a full tank of petrol + passenger + running gear. Thats why the times are so shitty. Times for the ITR in our MOTORS and WHEELS magazine are between 15.1 to 15.3. Not bad consdering all that extra weight. note these arent your average SCC magazine but mainstream ones like what CAR and EVO is to the UK.
What do you mean "running gear"?
I'm pretty sure the American mags don't ride with passengers. The full tank might have something to do with it also, I'm not sure how much fuel the American mags put in their cars while testing.

That might have something to do with it...but it also might be because once magazines test a car, they rarely go back and test it all over again. Someone mentioned the RSX Type S aritcle in Car & Driver which had a comparison to the Type R - and the times they quoted for the R were from their original review back in '97. So even if they have learned to launch the FWD cars by now, it's not going to show in a comparison like this, which will make the R look slower than it really is. Sport Compact Car most recently stated 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and 1/4 mile in 14.5 seconds...I agree that these are probably the most accurate times for a stock Type R.
Ah right. I know the US mags have the timing equip, not sure about cameras though. Ah we all know that you Aussie guys can't drive anyway J/K
Hey are you the guy with the monster brake setup? I remember some Aussie guy with a white ITR and some barely streetable six-pot setup. I think the car had SW388s on it and it looks a lot like the one in your avatar.

in order to get the launch they like, they end up over 6000 to launch.
can anyone guess how much hp a type-r makes at 6k+ rpm while
sitting still??? I am thinking its in the range of 115-130hp. AT MOST.
Makes for quite an interesting launch, starting at 100 hp and once the tires
move all of a sudden u jump to 140ish.
