Default WHATS THE BIG DEAL WITH NOS?

I went to the New Jersey auto show saturday and it was cool to see alot of

these cars that are in magazines in person. I was sad to see so many

yellow Rs. Limited yeah OK sure. I must have seen 10 not including the

couple in the show. I saw the R that was on e-bay with the Z3 fenders and

carbon fiber tail lights. He told me it was for sale for $28,000 and it was a

2000. When I asked him why he was selling it he said it was to slow for

him and wanted to purchase a 94 supra that was also in the show.

Anyway on the way back from the show a friend from GTM Motor sports

raced me in his 98 GSR with I/H/E built botom end and a 50 shot of NOS.

He has it set up with a switch thats triggerd when he runs it WOT. We

raced from 50mph to a little over 135mph. At first we were pretty even

then I started to pull a little, then I pulled hard, Next thing I know I'm

doing over 135mph and I slow down. he blew by me so fast then he

slowed down. We start doing speed limit and a few minutes later a state

trooper pulls along side us and shines his light into our cars for about 2

min. and pulls away. Thank God he was on the other side of the median

and couldn't get over to pull us over. Later we're doing speed limit and a

civic & prelude fly by at over 100mph but we didn't bite. When we all

stoped at Denny's to eat he told me I must have goten one of the good R's

to have pulled on him like that. How I hope this is true, or his car needs a

new tuner.

P.S. YEAH, YEAH, YEAH I KNOW DON'T STREET RACE
At least I don't do Drugs or Drink for that mater.

Minus the lights and lenses, our cars are modded the exact same. If that means I could beat a GS-R with I/H/E, built bottom end, and a 50 shot? That sounds a little far-fetched, unless your friend is a shitty driver or his NOS kit wasn't working right. Let's say that the other mods bumped him from 170 to around 200, then add in the NOS, so that's about 250hp at his crank vs. 205 or so for yours. Even with the weight diff, it's hard to believe. What's your fastest 1/4 mile time?

I don't know what to tell you. I do know he's a great driver. Do you really think his other mods other than NOS is putting him at 200 horses, I'm not so sure. It was a good race, well it usually is when you're the victor.

I've never ran a 1/4. Who cares anyway I said we raced from 50mph to over 135mph, not from a stand still.

I guess it depends on what kinds of mods they are. If it's like Weapon-R intake and DC 4-2-1 and some shitty exhaust, then def. not 200 hp at the crank. But if they are first-rate brands, then they might. Those mods on a GS-R will free up more hp than on an R, since our stock R parts are equivalent to most good aftermarket pieces and it is harder to improve on them than on a GS-R. However, the built bottom end also adds a few hp. So if not 200 at the crank, 190 for sure, before the NOS. So, can an R w/intake and filter make up a 45hp or so deficit? I'd like to think so but it's still weird. I'm sure others will weigh in on this too, they probably know more than me.

Typically a 50 shot of nitrous is about 27-40 hp at the wheels. Depending on the kit. What kind of start did each of you have? Did you start off in 5th gear and run it out or downshift? Also with nitrous, bottle pressure and temperature are major factors when spraying.

Boba- who'd like to point out that its nitrous not NOS.

Oh my .02

The Drugs and Drink may be bad But, the Street racing might kill yourself and others Alot Quicker!!!

Just Stop IT!

You make it more difficult for the rest of us and, ALOT more dangerous on the streets for everyone...

Enough lectures, Be careful and be safe. I lost my R to natural causes and was lucky enough to escape with my life "I owe alot to the Honda engineers." But, You might not be as lucky, and Now it's gonna be alot harder to get a new one than when I had to replace my R.

Good luck,

A.

Just because it was cool doesnt mean anything outside. Nitrous Oxide flows best at 85 degrees with 900 bottle psi. There are too many factors out there to be judgemental. If you want to race an ITR w/ nitrous, just let me know. I'll humble you. The results wont be the same though and we'll be on a drag strip not the highway./

Street race more, and make a post about every one of them here. That's what I'm going to start doing.

It's not preaching - it is common sense and a concern for other's safety...

I would love to race you, just to see how hard an ITR pulls on me with NOS. When are you coming over, and I said it was a GSR not ITR but I don't think you'll pull to hard on me

All I can say is that I can keep up with a stock R and I all I have is an AEM. A stock R can only beat me by about 1 and a half cars. If I added a 50 shot I would eat a stock R no prtoblem. So all I can say is that your buddy with the GSR who so you say has a built up bottom end and a 50 shot must have a SUNFIRE ENGINE in it if he cant pull on you or hes shifting from 1st to 5th because that is the biggest load of crap I have ever heard

Boba would spank yo a$$ (pullin, like yo momma the whole way), I'll throw a C-note on that race (at the strip) - BTW what would do if my 90 year old grandma pulled in front of you going 65 in your lane while you're going 135, looks like you're just askin' for trouble = my $.02

Sorry I disagree. Every time someone talks about driving fast on public roads whether it's 4AM on a back road or in rush hour traffic on the freeway (which I would give someone hell for myself, because that's just stupid and careless), everyone chimes in "don't street race".

Bottom line is this. I go either drag racing or autocrossing nearly 25 times a year. I drive mellow MOST of the time. I pass up many a street race because I don't think the conditions are right. However, going fast is what I bought the car for. I like to tear around the mountain roads in my area, and I like to make a quick run against another car if the conditions permit. Drag racing at the track is nowhere near the rush you get from meeting someone at a stoplight and giving them a quick run.

I think people should reserve thier comments for situations where the person was obviously being a dumb-***. I've seen people get flamed for making a 2AM stoplight dash or freeway run on a completely deserted road. That's ridiculous. It's thier life and they aren't putting anyone in danger who didn't make a consious decision to be there (IOW, if they get hurt there's no one to blame but themselves).

Endagering others is a bad idea, I'm with you there. However, every street races doesn't endanger innocent bystanders. If I want to risk my own life, that's my business.

I agree with you Newt, but the fella said 135MPH on a public road...little too much, no matter the time or road.

So you don't have an R with basic bolt ons and NOS if you're running 12.6 in a 1/4. I said whats the big deal with NOS not $10,000 in motor work, and on that grandmom situation I'll beat that Ho's a$$ like I was her pimp

I think that depends. I've had my car going 135 in the middle of Wyoming on a road that I didn't see another car on for nearly 50 miles at a time. I would have been in big trouble if I wrecked considering it would have been hours to get to a Hospital, but no one else was in danger at all.

You should be free to take any risk with your own life that you want. It's when you put other people at risk that the problems start. I subscribe to the philosophy that says "your freedom ends at my nose". I think any law to protect you from yourself is just plain dumb. In the case of street racing and speed limits, it should be the cops judgement call as to whether you were putting anyone else in danger against thier will.
