act puck 6 clutch question
are the act puck 6 clutch disc any good? i may be getting that disc with the heavy duty p.p.....now my friend told he he knows someone who used that setup and blew the tranny because of there is no springs in the disc? and i need a clutch asap how many of you people are runnin that clutch and what kind of set up all i have is i.h.e and aem pully....thanks
With a HD pressure plate? Yeah it will blow your tranny up. You need the street setup with springs. You don't have enough to warrant the 6 puck, and when you do I would use the street PP unless you have a ridiculous amount of hp and if you have that you are going to blow trannys anyway.
For a street car you definitely want a sprung hub. Unsprung has harsh engagement, and chatters on occaison. A Clutchmasters stage one is a nice clutch kit for a sohc.

I love em. I have ran a 6 puck in every single one of my cars. I will never get a ss disc. its cheaper, it engages like a bat out of hell, and you dont have to wait to break it in. I have ran it in my old crx with b16 turbo, my integra with a SiG motor, my new crx with lsvtec, and all my friend use em.
The only time you blow the tranny or break axles is if you dont know how to drive and you drive like an @$$.

yeah, you can use it. But i always recommend the 6-puck. I have worked at 4 different shops and have never heard of someone blowin a tranny cause of it. if you want somethin smooth, then go with the HD pp and the ss disc. but if you want to race then go with the hd pp and the 6 puck disc

I run a 6 puck with hd pp (unsprung) on my supercharged 89 CRX Si thats street driven and runs track events. yeah it does chatter lick a ***** sometimes and scares little ol ladies but it pulls like a bastard with no slip at all.
**** I've got a ACT 4 Puck W/ Xtreme Pressure Plate for about a year now in a daily driven B16 CRX that I drive in downtown San Francisco all the time with no problems.
Gotta tell you that your calves with have a work out in traffic but it's all worth it when you chrip on 4th

im running a xtreme pressure plate with organic street disc in my 91 hatch with b16a/s1 tranny. im having alot of trouble with it. it wont engage/dis-engage!!! i got to work a little... if you drive normal(shifting around 3-5000rpm) then it will shift fine, but if you take to 8-9000rpm then it does nothing. also it lets out all the way at the end, like way at the end. ive heard of people having alot of bending/flexing issues with this setup in civic/crxs. anyone else have trouble. someone told me to try and use the integra clutch cable but that didnt help! i really need help with this!!! any info would be greatly appriciated! thanks!
It sounds like way more than you need. For those of you that say the springs will help your transmission, you are mistaken. The springs of a disc are intended to absorb torsional vibrations which cause transmission noises. On a race disc the springs contribute to clutch chatter and are heavy, making it harder on sycros. It will not be smoother by any means, but rather quieter. You would be better off with our performance organic.
I have heard of maybe three complaints regarding the arms bending or breaking over the last several years. I assume from what you are saying that the disengagment point is close to the floor. Which street disc are you running? If it is the regular stock disc rather than the SS performance organic, it will take more travel and I have especially heard of problems with cable setups on the Civic/B series swaps. I cannot imagine you having this trouble with the SS disc.

im running the ss oragnic disc. i took my dash out and checked the clutch pedal mounts and they were flexing really bad when you try to push the clutch in. so i welded a support bracket in place to reduce flex. well it did reduce flex a little but still no clutch!!! i guess the next step is to rip apart the tranny and look at the clutch. i really dont want to do that but it looks like im gonna have to. i really cant see the clutch being messed up, it only has maybe 500 miles on it !!! thats it! do you think there could be something wrong with the disc or pressure plate??? i heard sometime they come messed up from the factory(very rarely)? im shootin in the dark. i appriciate all the help! let me know!
What year car is this? I have only heard of problems with the pedal assembly on the early Civics/CRXs (84-87). I haven't heard of problems on later years. I cannot imagine having this trouble with the SS disc unless something is wrong. Normally the ACT P/PL using the SS disc takes less travel to operate than the stock setup. It may still be something with the car but I would be glad to take a look at the clutch parts. If you can send digital shots first it may save some shipping.

i wouldn't get the 6 puck unless you're making that much power/torque because I had a problem in the past where I wasn't generating enough power and the clutch was grabbing TOO hard, making this chattering noise every time (which is why your friend blew his tranny). I also think it's too harsh for daily driving and I doubt that you're making that much power with just i.h.e.
THOSE DISC DESTROY YOUR FLYWHEEL they are made out of a different matierial than stage 1-3 clutches they grip well but wear through your flywheel i have a clutch masters stage 2 and it grip better than i'll ever need in my b18c hatch

Generally they only distroy inferior flywheels because of the material. Some cheap aluminum flywheels use 1018 steel (or equal) for the friction surface. This material is too soft and will wear down the steel and the disc prematurely. Stock flywheels and Fidanza (who makes them for Clutch Masters) hold up pretty good since the material is harder. Oh my gosh, did I say CM are pretty good?! I couldn't tell about all the other brands. Once the pucks break in the wear isn't that bad. They need to break in hard and fast though because they are fairly abrasive until they break in. Usually a few hard slips will help to take the roughness away and they aren't that bad on the mating material. Still I don't recommend them for the street for almost all circumstances.

Wow this is good information! I had an ACT extreme clutch (six puck and xtreme pressure plate) in my CRX and I blew a few trannys, but I wasn't pissed because I knew that it was my fault that it happened. Now I have the six puck unsprung with the street pp and no problems yet!
great, once i get everything apart, ill take some pics. where would you like me to send them? thanks for all your help!!<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by ACTman »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">What year car is this? this is law:
ACT clutches are very very good. if installed properly they can cause problems like chatter, trans failure, clutch failure etc.
if you going to be driving this car on the street, use a disc w/ a sprung hub. act has both sprung and unsprung hubs in their 6 puck and 4 puck discs.
it is possible to blow a trans w/ an oem clutch. obviously the harder the enguagement, the more stress on parts the quicker they wear out.
imo the act XTSS is a fantastic clutch kit for street driving. it has a relitivly heavy pedal feel but is totaly streetable. enguagement is smooth. holding power is awesome. it has a holding power of 100% over stock and the torque capasity varies w/ engine. the d series is 270lbs of trq
if you going to do it, do it right the 1st time and use ACT
clutchmaster pressure plates are very good. their disc's *suck* every person i know that has used one has destroyed their hubs. either broke them completely or had springs break. that will kill your trans in about no secconds flat.
centerforce has pretty good clutches but dont have the holding power of act. they dont have a heavy pedal feel as well.
exedy clutches are not ment to hold much hp imo. everything i have seen from them is basicly an oem disc w/ a slightly more durable pressure plate. pedal pressure is like stock for the pussies
if your turboing, and actually plan on bosting the crap out of the engine and making some real numbers, use the XT (xtreeme) pressure plate w/ a sprung 6 puck disc. it'll hold and grab like mad. if your doing a track only set up use the unsprung 6 puck or 4 puck.
guy w/ the xtss and enguagement problems: tighten your clutch cable some more. i had 500 miles on mine w/ a brand new clutch cable. the cable will need to break in as well and streteches. it requires adjustment. i drove around for a bit griding gears like a **** b/c my cable streteched a bit. everything is absolutly fine now.

i run the xt PP daily and love it. drive a stock car w/ a stock clutch sometime after you are used to your xtss, you'll sware it broken
if you can drive stick, you can street an XTSS w/o any problems
guy w/ the "STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3". stage #'s mean jack ****. thats all F&F crap
