hey,

which timing? valve or ignition. i think its ignition timing youre talkin about. my friend has an 95 gsr with obd1 and i advanced his ignition timing about 1.5 degrees BTDC ( before top dead center) and now he tells me that his car pulls a bit harder, i really dont no if thats true or if its jus in his head...

yea it is ignition timing...I currently have i/h/e and this guy told me that I should advance the timing and that it would be beneficial. How do you advance the timing? I know it's something to do with the distributer

You will need a timing gun to do it correctly.

As long as you advance it no more than 2-4 degrees and keep 93 octane or better you won't have any problems.

C-Speed has a good how-to check it out at http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/timing/timing.html

Since stock is 16deg+/-2deg, you can set it to 18deg without any worries.

I don't know, it is hard for me to tell. I just advanced mine to 19 today when it was at 16 and at the drag strip i ran 13 times and got a 15.0-15.1 every time. So this week I am going to try the strip again and see if there is any diff in times. I don't know any other way to tell, it doesnt seem any faster to me. Of course a 1whp diff is hard to tell anyway

Advancing the timing helps, but not a lot. It is FREE so you may as well do it. 18 degrees BTDC is regarded as optimal from a power standpoint. I rechecked mine yesterday and it was at like 25!! No problems b/c I use 93 octane but check your timing regularly. If your timing is off all the money you throw into mods is partially wasted because your car is not performing like it should.

My acceleration was smoother and stronger at 18 than it was at 25 or 16 but not a whole lot.

Can't say for sure since every car is different. But there was a dyno in the Integra dyno center (don't remember the URL) that showed a 2-3hp gain throughout the range. After I saw that, it was good enough for me to go out and do mine.

I have heard something about a paperclip in the ECU (bypass it I guess)while you have your timing advanced (not real sure about the details just read over it briefly). Is this something you have to do on an ODB1 or not?

thanks

You can use a paperclip as an alternative to buying the factory service connector when you set your timing--OBD I or otherwise.

I have mine set at 20BTD with out anny problems. The car seams to pull a little harder spestially from 3500 on up I feel it most on the midrange. To change it you first have to short your factory service conector(that's the one on the pasenger side in the green cap) use a paper clip. Then thith the engine fully warmed up you can go at it. borowing or renting a timing gun will help allot. If your not sure what to do try and ask someone that's experienced. I can sit here and explaine it in detail but you will just get lost. Try it and Good luck! I would also suggest getting a helm manual you would be surprice of the tring you can do with this thing in your hands. Give it a try and let us know.

DAMN!!! 93 octane!!! we in california only have 92 and some state or federal law or something, maybe the gas companies, are reducing the octane level in our gas. SUCKS now we only will have 91 octane to use in our cars.... you people are lucky to have 93 octane from the pump. california is a crappy place to be if your car needs high octane.
