My car dies when I remove the negitive battery cable...what is wrong?

What could that be?

Alternator is on its way out. With the cable removed it should still run, the battery is for starting only.

Because you lose the chassis ground. The car is only going to run if you remove the positive cable and alternator is good.

that sounds like its not a problem to me......the car still needs a ground, but i dont know if it runs through the battery for that.....i cant remember how it goes....i'll just shut up.

no it should run with the battery totally disconnected...both positive and negitive...i just isn't

exactly Why are you disconnecting the negative to test something. The electrical system needs something that is more negative then just the chassis. IE batteries' negative post.

are we talking about the battery ground?

the car should run without the battery in there so its most likely your alternator.

Your never suppose to disconnect the battery when the car is running, you could cause an electrical spike and fry something.
