Hi y'all,

I'm doing some work on my non-functional A/C system tomorrow on the Civic, and I'm considering converting it to R134. Any thoughts or suggestions? Is it compatible?

i just recently re-installed my A/C in my civic and converted to R134 in the process.

make sure you dont do it the cheap way: get the BRASS fittings(they dont leak) new o-rings and fill it up to 80% of what it was on r12 with ester oil

Thanks for the input. I am mostly concerned about the compatibility of the existing oil and seals with R134. I have never performed a retrofit (but I have done work on R12 and R134 systems), but I have heard antecdotal evidence about seals and/or oil in old systems being incompatible for retrofits in other cars.

Just wondering if a proper 134 retrofit in an existing EF Civic system poses any compatibility problems. Here is what I have planned: install new dryer, install a used OE compressor (original is source of leak), evacuate system w/ vacuum pump, add R134 to recommended pressure.

Will it be reliable?

Are you recommending I replace ALL of the o-rings? That's a lot of work! There must be at least 10 of them in various obscure places of the car (2 each at the compressor, evaporator, condenser, exp. valve, dryer)! PITA!

I have R12 I can use, but I'd rather not. But if O-ring replacement is necessary, I think I'll avoid the retrofit. But is it necessary?

 

you have to but i'd recommend it i have 134a in my 88hatch and it blows cold as fawk and it has been for the past year.the only thing that sucks is the fact that i had to sacrifice my far left vent for the hydro tranny conversion.
