Rev limiter at 5K? WTF?
My brother just bought an 88 CRX si, and for some reason the rev limiter is coming on at 5k! He tried another computer out of a 91 CRX si, and it behaves exactly the same. This car is not yet street legal, so he has only driven it around the neighborhood for short rides (5-10 mins tops). The computer has never thrown any codes, but maybe because it is only being driven for such short times? I have never personally looked at it, but i will probably take a ride this weekend. Any ideas?

Are you sure it's the rev limiter hitting, and not something more severe like detonation? I mean, if the timing's really advanced on it, then it'll detonate more, causing the RPM to stumble... or maybe the distributor cap & rotor are f*cked? I don't really know

I'm pretty sure the engine is in proper tune. My brother says it just doesn't go beyond 5k period. Not when driving, not in neutral, nothing. I was thinking about it, and i think that maybe the tach is just w-a-y off. I'll have to drive it around tomorrow and see how it feels. Maybe i'll see if i can borrow a portable tach and test that theory.
also does the check engine, even appear on th cluster, before you turn the car on?....also is it Si, or is it HF, both look the same (MPFI) but with a redline of 5-5.5k in HF....
I just called my brother, and there is a big possibility that it IS an HF. But the funny thing is, we have the SI computer in it and it still has the rev limit. Yesterday we tried my SI injector box, and there was no change. What caused the fuel cut-off? Is there some kind of extra control unit that i'm not aware of?

Try inspecting the cap and rotor.. if you take off the cap and inspect for carbon tracking or arcing, That could
cause it to miss because of such a high resistance in the secondary circut of the ignition system. also check
the rotor . Check to see if ttttthe center piece burnt through. HTH.
