Default Primering car flat black... why won't it go on smoothly?

Unlike all the glossy paint I've ever used, this flat black is showing almost every streak I make with it. So far, I've only painted my hood, but its got all these swirlies and spots that look darker than others. Is this normal on black primered cars? Why is it so much harder to work with? The reason I care is that Im going to have to drive around like this for about a week. TIA
