Default auto clicks like a manual when shifting

Hmm.. my auto has been making a clicking sound lately like going from N to R or N to D. Been driving it conservatively, no neutral drops or anything like that. Sounds just like the click from a manual tranny. Will changing the ATF make a difference? Any helpful info would be cool.
