I think it does sound maybe a little bit deeper in tone than the SOHC 1.6. The sound will vary though depending on your mods, (a header, test pipe, exhaust system. turbo and so forth). You really can't go off of a WAV clip unless you're willing to by "their" setup. I currently have a DC Sports header, test pipe and a TRUST/Greddy Exhaust. I actually enjoy the deep tones and lack of raspy noises that are emitted with this setup. The question should be more like what kinda exhaust system should I buy? If you would like to listen to sounds. I will put together a WAV of mine if you wish though.

Hey, that would be cool if you could do that for me, id like to hear how it sounds. I plan on getting either a dc sports or zcspeed header, magnaflow cat back and a cold air intake as my basic bolt ons. What is a test pipe? I dont want anything illegal as I dont want to have to do alot of work when it comes time to pass the wonderful California Smog certification.

You won't pass a smog with a ZC... It will fail the visual. You need either need someone who's dumb enough to miss the fact that your vacuum diagram on your hood doesn't match the way it is on the engine or someone who's cool enough to look the other way on that stuff.

As to the sound of the engine....it's very nice! I don't have exhaust yet, but with just the ZC and an AEM CAI, the sound is enough to make me want to wind it out to 7k off of every stop.

its not like i was gonna just go to the smog shop with my dohc motor and hope they dont realize that its supposed to be a sohc. im gonna do it the right way, go to a referee and have them inspect it. the motor will be as new or newer than my car and will have all of the original smog equipment. i am not putting anything in my car that is older than it so i shouldn't have a problem getting it smog'd. and besides, a friend of mine owns a smog shop. So all you have is just the zc and a CAI and it sounds sweet? Cool, gives me something to look forward to.

A test pipe is basically a pipe which replaces the Catalytic converter. They can usually have an extra bung for hooking up Accurate Air/Fuel meters. So this mod wouldn't be in your favor since you live in CA. It's kinda nice living where you don't have to have your vehicle inspected. With a catalytic converter though the exhaust will sound slightly different, Usually a tad bit quieter.
