y1 with LSD differential (bearings)
My Y1 has a limited slip differential. It is snapping and clacking on right turns and when backing up in a tight turn.( Like backing out of driveways) It is my understanding that honda used 2 types of LSD's. A gear type and a clutch type. Trans guy says it is the axle, axle guy says it is the trans/differential. I have replaced the axle. Trans axle is getting noisier, kind of a low growl. Now there is a clicking in the dash. It sounds like the speedo cable. I'm thinking worn differential bearings or worn out clutch plates in LSD.
You've got the oem gear type LSD, and what your describing is a common thing with the Y1 lsds. I seriously doubt its your bearings. The best suggestion given for your problem is to switch to honda MFT, if your not already using it.
Already using Honda MTF. My son and I had the car at the local dragstrip last fall and on his third run he says the car popped loudly going into third gear. He also spun the number three rod bearing. Engine has been rebuilt, thats when we noticed the clattering. Can the differential be converted to an open differential? Does anyone know where to purchase repair parts?
You LSD sounds like it 'popped'.
You can just drop in an open diff with no problems, except that the y1 tranny is the only one with a 4.266 final drive. So you will have to get a y1 open diff for it to work. And the ring gear on your LSD is not the same as a normal ring gear, so its not an option to switch it.
I actually have LSD from a Y1 sitting in my garage, with a broken ring gear.
If your LSD is does turn out to be bad, i would be willing to trade you a perfect Y1 open diff (which is actually in my trans right now) for your broken LSD, or just the ring gear from it.

i have a y1 with lsd and it used to the exact same thing that you have described, except for the popping when you put it into gear, but it used to chater when i went around corners, or bached out. what i did was bought the lsd additive made by redline it was only like six bucks. i just mixed it with the rest of my fluid and the chattering went away in minutes.
