Balance shaft belt/retainer help.
I think the vibration in my car is due to the balance shafts being off.
Do I line up the gears BEFORE the belt goes on, or line the gears up to when the belt is on and fully tight, the gears are lined up with eachother?
I'm having a hard time keeping the gears lined up. I'll line them up, then put the belt on, but when it gets tightened down, both of the gears turn inwards.
Should I turn the gears outwards a bit, then tighten it down, to where when it's tight the gears are lined up?
Also, how do I install this balance shaft retainer? I don't really understand where it goes.
I searched, but couldn't find anything helpful.

I would suggest getting a manual for doing the balancer belt install, but I'm sure there are some here that can help.
As for the retainer, if your referring to the retainer to keep the shaft seal from backing out, that was a recall item that has expired. I'm sure you realize that and that is why your doing it yourself. That retainer goes on the shaft seal around the shaft, and actually bolts to the outside of the lower cover. One problem here, is it will cause the crank pulley to rub on the outside of the cover, eventually wearing a hole in it. Make sure you create a little notch for the retainer in the cover so your crank pulley won't rub on the cover when installed.
Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually got every manual known to man kind except a Helms, and currently I'm broke, so I don't see myslf getting one soon.
All I really need to know about it is about the gears. Do I make sure they're lined up before the belt goes on, of lined up after the belt is tight.
As far as the retainer, I guess I'm confused...I never knew anything about it (H22 in a Civic), but I got the retainer cuz it was like $2. It's just a piece of metal, with a large notch in it, and I'm not quite sure exactly what it goes on?
When you say it bolts to the outside of the lower cover, do you mean it goes on the outside of the black plasticl lower cover, or what?
I've never seen where it goes or anything of the sort, so I'm kind of in the dark here. I'd just like to get it done while I'm doing some other things so it won't be nagging me in the back of my mind.
TIA!

Ok, without my book in hand (My engine builder has it) I can't really say which it is for the balance shaft belt.
However, the retainer: As your looking at the end of the motor with the timing belt and balancer belt, the retainer with the large notch goes over the left shaft, on the exhaust side of the motor. When you get it in place there, you'll see where the one hole for mounting it aligns with the 10mm bolt that is on the outside of the cover there. From memory, I don't beleive this bolt is actually used on the cover, but for something else. There is only one 10mm bolt right there anyway, so you'll be able to figure that out once you get it in place. Just take in mind my comments above on the clearance issue with the crank pulley, you'll see what I mean when you go to put the cover on, the thickness of that retainer causes a the lower cover to rub the crank pulley. Just be sure to cut a notch in it so the cover fits snugly to the entire lower belt area as it did before the retainer was there.

Ah, alright...makes sense.
Thanks for the help.
After taking a few things out, and looking at how little room I have with the h22 in my civic, I don't think this is going to be too fun

I know how you feel, I'm in the middle of rebuilding my H22A1 for my Prelude. Obviously I don't have the fitment problem you may have though, good luck......
Dangit, the only H22 manual I had was on CD, and now my CD drive is messed up.
On the oil pump gear, does the dot/white painted line face up? And on the exhaust side balance shaft, do I make the line on the gear horizontal, ala a set of cam gears?
TIA!
