Very newbie question: What is the ignitor?
My 92 LS engine died while I was driving it. There were no warning signs. One moment I was driving it, the next the gas pedal was worthless. My battery is fine, headlights and electrically operated equipment work fine. I'm guessing that it could be something within my distributor. Others are telling me that it's the coil or the ignitor. I know where the coil is and from what I can see in the service manual, it seems fairly easy to replace. But here's my question: What is the ignitor?
I don't see it in the manual. Is it located within the distributor assembly or am I looking in the wrong place? Is the term ignitor slang for something else?
Any other ideas for what might have caused my problem? Thanks for any help

same thing happened to my friend's ride just like you. it could possibly be your ignitor. it is in the distributor and your manual should tell/show you where it's located. if its a helm manual than you should have no problem.
Thanks blaze. I actually found it as the "igniter unit" while looking at the manual more last night after I posted. What item was the culprit in your friend's ride?
his igniter went out and he bought a new one. he came up on a whole distributor and didn't need the new igniter unit so i traded some eibach sportlines for his new ignitor... i figured i could use it in case mine went out.

Hey I got an igniter for sale. Brand new. Something like that happened to me and so I bought a coil and the igniter. Turns out it was the coil and now I have the igniter sitting around. If you want it, email me an offer. casper_yang@hotmail.com

i had the symptons of the car bogging and then having the surge of power. that's what kept me from passing my hybrid at the smog ref.... i had to hold the car at 2500 rpms and it would hold there for awhile but then the rpm's would drop. i couldn't figure out my problem but i experimented and swapped out my dist. from my gs-r and used that ...
