changing clutch...any pointers?
alright. I'm doing a clutch job on my crx w/ b16. my old clutch is slipping...anyway, i never done clutch job before and would like you experts to give me some pointers on how to do it
Jeff-

Jeff-
It's pretty easy, just takes a long time...
1) Remove axles
2) Remove all sensors/wires from transmission, including shift linkage
3) Support engine from above/below
4) Support transaxle with a jack or a block or something
5) Unbolt transaxle and remove from vehicle engine bay
6) Remove old clutch + discard
7) Remove flywheel
8) Remove pilot bearing from center of flywheel & have flywheel resurfaced
9) Polish contact surfaces of both the clutch and flywheel and inspect/replace rear main seal (not recommended to replace if it doesn't need it badly, it's a major PITA)
10) Install new pilot bearing to flywheel - be careful how you install it, it's easy to break
11) Remove bolt on transmission housing holding clutch release fork + arm
12) Remove old throwout bearing & toss
13) Install new throwout bearing, reinstall clutch release fork + arm
14) Install flywheel + torque to spec using a cross-pattern using Loctite
15) Using a clutch alignment tool, install clutch + PP
16) Torque to spec in SMALL increments using a cross-pattern (doing this badly will warp the PP or flywheel and cause clutch actuation shudders)
17) Doublecheck torque specs - do NOT overtighten
18) Reinstall transmission, reconnect all linkages, wires, etc
19) Break in clutch, enjoy

From past expierence:
Make sure you use a clutch alignment tool, it will come with your new clutch.
Make sure to use lock-tite on the fly wheel bolts.
Get your flywheel resurfaced, should be around $40 of machining, you could opt to get it lightened too since it's off.
DONT put the clutch release spring on wrong, check a book first and make sure it's on right, make sure the clutch arm has movement before putting the trans back in.
Good Luck.

I did it before. Make sure your clutch kit comes with that tool alignment tool, if not you can use a universal tool and it will work ok, but with no tool you are SOL! I had to drive around forever looking for a place selling a tool to fit the '88 tranny, no place had it, had to rent the universal tool and it did the job.
