Type S VS Type R? Serious question from a serious buyer :)
Hey guys. I'm new around here, I've been reading the forums for a long time though. Anyway, I'm in the market for a new car and was looking really hard at the Integra Type R. But... now that there has been so much advertising for the RSX, I'm not sure what to get. They're both in my price range, which is a "better" car, and why?
Has anyone had experience with both, or read anything comparing the two? Any help will be appreciated. I'm really interested in BOTH of these cool cars

I guess my question is...
RSX Type S = Integra Type R? (or is it closer to the GS-R?)
I want a car that is fun to drive. I currently drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the thing is about as fun as a root canal

Depends on what you're looking for really, if your main concern is performance, go for the R. If you want decent performance with lots of creature comforts, (ie, sunroof, subwoofer, leather), go for the type-s. both are nimble handling machines. the R has quite a weight advantage, and honestly, i don't miss the sunroof or leather at all. the R seats are almost perfect as it is. it all comes down to what you're looking for though.
Damn the new Type-R!! Its like the BMW M3...the M3s were awesome till the new ones came out...will 97/98 and 00/01 owners suffer the same fate?!?!
Damn I used to drive a grand cherokee too. Well all I have to say is I love my type r. I haven't driven the rsx yet, but I pretty sure its not too shabby itself. I think the rsx is probably on the same line as say the celica gts, which is a great car, but see all the time.
i think type s is just a grs a little more fancy.. the R should come out the questions is when.. maybe a year maybe more? i was told by the sales guy that i purchased mine from is that they will bring the R in 2003.. but i think he was just bs me.. we'll see..

Alright. Well, if they're bringing the Type R in 2003, if I got a ITR now, I'd be able to trade my R in for the RSX R just about when my loan is up
I've always wanted a car with a sunroof though. lol. I read someone's post on here about taking a 90 degree turn at 80mph in an R, I can hardly wait to get mine

If you are not going to track the car regularly, then go for RSX-S. I was impressed by the new interior, especially the seat-it is very supportive and comfortable- 5'11" and 170 lbs. But as for me, I will wait for the RSX-R. I know for sure that Honda is going to doing something about the Subaru WRX and I am not in a hurry to replace my two years old car. Then again, I don't mind at all to have the RSX-S replace any vehicles in my garage.
Type-S or Type-R, it is a win-win situation bro. You can't go wrong with either one. Good luck.

Well, I like import cars, and I like fast cars. I like cars with good handling... So, this makes the R my dreamcar
...But I also have always wanted leather and a sunroof. I understand the RSX has the new i-VTEC, would this make it faster than the ITR? I don't know much about things like this, other than what I've read on the internet. I'm just a computer geek who makes too much money
I just want something that's fun to drive. Under $30,000. *sigh* so many choices... All I know for sure is, My Jeep is a GAS HOG, and it is about as fun to drive as a BUS.

The R will be faster in stock form, and probably modified form as well. I'd go for that. plus how often do you see an R? pretty soon every kid and his mother will have the RSX type-s, in that blue color. to each his own.
I drove the Type-S today and it felt sluggish and unwillingly to rev in comparison to every other honda I have driven. Stereo is nice, A/C blows ice cubes not air, interior is cool. The Type-S also handles well. The suspension surprised me it is stiffer than I expected. Great car but not the same type of car as the R.
The type R is faster if you drive the **** out of it, but if you never plan to track the car, the RS-X might be more than adequate and more luxurious. The RS-X type S is the GS-R replacement and there will be a type R in a couple years here. The RS-X will also have more torque down low than a current type R, making it punchier at low RPM's. Another option is the Prelude type SH. They are DEALING on them and they don't give up anything in overall performance to the RS-X type S (the type SH still handles better), and they have an honest to goodness double wishbone suspension. The Prelude also has a standard sunroof.
That's pretty much what I figured. What I like best about the R is that there are no hidden charges, you can't get any extra options, or anything like that. I originally wanted to get a Lexus IS, thinking "Well, ****, I can afford a $30,000 car" But... the $30k IS like... doesn't even have seats, lol, they cost 5 grand extra.
When any of you guys bought your R's, was it pretty cut and dry? You found a dealership that had one, 25 grand, and you're out the door? Or do Dealerships want more because it is a rare car? Is there a chance in hell of getting good financing on one?
Thanks

I really never plan on taking the car to the track, I just want a stock car that is a good time.
If you're into racing, the tradeoffs are worth it, but if you're not you should look at another car. If you just want a car that's fun to drive and relatively fast, the RSX would be a decent choice. Even though I haven't driven it yet, I think it's safe to say the RSX is a winner. When's the last time Honda made a bad car?

I like driving fast, and turning fast, that's why I think the ITR would be a good car, and that's why I started looking at it to begin with. Maybe I'll get in to track racing, who knows.

I went and saw the Type S and the regular model at the dealer I bought my R from yesterday (they were closed, but they had one of each on the lot).
Two words for the RSX ........ butt ugly!!
God, it looked worse in person than it did in the mags! At least on the exterior. The interior was pretty sweet looking.
The Type S is priced right in the GS-R range, the sticker was 23,500, not too shabby all things considered. The only legit road test I've heard of so far (by Car and Driver) has the Type S at 6.1 to 60 and 14.8 in the 1/4. Right in the R's territory for acceleration.
I'm going to try to test drive it at lunch, so we'll see how it rides ....

MIKE D on paper the Type-S should be punchier down low, but I drove it yesterday expecting it to be like that and it just felt like it was bogging. Then vtec kicked in around 6,000 and revved nicely to 7,000, but then it felt like it didn't want to rev the rest of the way to redline. I then jumped back in my R and didn't have to rev the **** out of it, it just feels faster. I haven't driven a GS-R in a long time, so maybe the Type-S would have a leg up. All in all it is a great car just doesn't feel has good as it sounds on paper.
I guess the only question is now is what kind of financing I can get.
(This is the first new car I've ever bought, I've got used all my life
)
Is the financing rate controlled by the bank or the dealership? I see commercials on TV about .9 APR... What kind of APR can you get on a type R? How does that all work? Is it dealer specific, model specific, or what?
Thanks

Has anyone read the latest issue of Car and Driver...
Engine - advantage RSX
RSX - S pulled a 14.8 @ around 96mph.
remember that green Honda engines are relatively slow compared to one with 8 - 10k on it. I think the RSX should be able equal the R in speed, unless Honda gave C&D a ringer.
Handling - advantage Type R
Where the RSX will not be able to hang is in the handling department. The R is lighter, has double wishbone suspension, superior OEM tires, and a limited slip.
Livability - big edge RSX
The seats are great (I like the R's too), 6 disc change, sunroof, much more queit, cruise control....blah blah blah.
Now it comes down to what you want.......if you don't take it to the track I pray to GOD you would never realize the handling differences. I shoot down the mentioned Prelude because it lacks the utility of the hatchback....you would not believe how much crap you can stuff into an integra. That would never happen with a Lude. Also you will likely have better resale on the RSX than the R and especially the Lude, as they are discontinuing the Prelude and the RSX is the replacement to the Integra.
Go for the RSX.........and let us know what you think!
