ZC slugs with LS rods
Im SLOWLY trying to get my stuff together to take out my ZC, rebuild it and put it back together for a homemade turbo kit. This would be the first time Ive taken a motor apart and Im hoping to learn alot from it (and yes I have friends who know what there doing, so Im not going to just tear into it myself). The only thing Im really worried about is the rods. It wont be crazy boost or anything, 10psi TOPS, and more than not will just be 8psi.
Heres the question: from the reading Ive done you can machine the LS rods fairly easily to match up to the stock d series piston. It would make for some cheap insurance against the rods going without spending the cash on after market rods that I really wouldnt make use of. However, someone else has just told me that you HAVE to use after market pistons with the LS rods in a D series. Not only do I not understand why this would be, but Im not sure they are right. Anyone know for sure? Any machine work needed to be done to the block? And has anyone tried having the piston machined to fit the rod? Would that work? Any insite is helpfull. Thanks

Hi Eli.
Well just talk about this the next time I see you. lol.
Anyone else have any experience with this? Any other opinions?
(not that I dont trust yours Eli, just looking to see what people have to say about it all, and hopefully hear from someone whos acually done it)

I'll try to help ya out the best I can. Crowler was making bushings to help w/the wrist pin size differences but I've heard that they no longer offer this service, your best bet is to call. Ls rods are .935 wide and D rods are .892 wide so shave off .0125 on each side of the big end. Make sure to notch the block so the rods will clear too. I personally would not of used ZC pistons, I would of used A6 ones w/ZC rods that were shot-peened and new rod bolts. ZC rods are among the strongest D series rods and the pistons are good for higher c/r.
the end cost will be almost as much as eagle rods, plus you will have to either
a)buy after market pistons.
b) machine groves to accept clips in your stock pistons. (I have no clue what this cost.) I used SRP pistons and LS rods in my d16z, which is 85% complete now.
here is hte difference in the 2 setups

what about the 88 teg rods then? Im guessing to put the LS rods in is going to end up costing me more cash than I wanna spend for a budget build up. I cant remeber where but I heard the 88 tegs were a bit bigger than the ZC (mabey hold about 250hp) and were bolt ins, anyone know about this? Cant remeber where I read this though. An issue of Honda tuning I think? Anyone else know anything about this?

You can match LS rods with ZC pistons and I heard its a great combo. If you would like some cheap LS rods with LS pistons on them PM me or email me. They have 60,000 miles on them. Your looking at $25 plus shipping.
i dont know howmany have done this but another alternative is to use the LS rods with civic GX pistons for a NA monster.
check out dseries.org and search about it, alot of talk on that site about this setup. it yields relly high CR ~13:1? but the advantage is the GX pistons have the same wrist pin diameter as the LS rods. so all you haev to do is machine the big end. (much cheaper than getting bushing and pistons) I wouldnt even try to do this with FI, but a good head and cam could result in a fast car.
just some food for thought.

Thanks for the info guys.
TurboSol: whats the civic GX? Im in Canda, so I dont think we have that model. What motor is it? Ive never heard of this.
Anyone have any info on the 88 teg rods at all?
