Default Finally Drove GG today! Anyone got a KAAZ LSD? VTEC4GS?

Hey all,

For the first time since Dec 99, I drove my grocery getter today!

It was great. There was a slight issue with "sputtering" hesitation but we think it may just be the gas. Obviously it's still in break-in, so I didn't even come close to VTEC or anything. Damn! With my Spoon flywheel it revs like a ****. Also, the ITR gearing is schweeeeet, esp with JDM FD!

The other thing we came across was the KAAZ lsd. This thing makes the most hideous sounds. The mechanic broke it in for about 45 minutes and changed the fluid.

Even now, it makes this awful sound when turning with any throttle. He said it's much better than before the break-in though. It's like a metallic grinding, not very pleasant.

I've heard people say that their KAAZ is "noisy," but is it really this ugly?

Thanks,

FB

I've got KAAZ on my car, and, at first, it'll make that clunking noise, but, over time, it tends to go away. But, either way, its well worth it to have this type of LSD on your ride.

Cool,

Thanks for the info. Did you follow the break-in (30 minutes of figure 8s then change fluid)? There fluid was clean after the break-in, but we thought there would be particles in it.

Is it like a grinding sound that doesn't sound good?

Should I change the fluid again when I do the first oil change? Maybe I just have to drive it for awhile to break it in more.

Should I keep coasting through turns to avoid the grinding for awhile longer, or should I try to give power in turns to help break it in?

Thanks,

yes, the kazz, and any clutch disc style lsd makes those hideous noises. you think you cv boat or axles are broken. that is the price you pay for getting traction.

I have the KAAZ too, before it got break in, it give some loud clicking sound between metal during slow turn. Afer I break it in and change the fluid, the sound is much more quieter, and it went away after awhile. So right now, my KAAZ hardly give any noise at all!!! It only have some very little clicking noise when I turn really slow, hardly notice it at all!!
BTW, I did follow the break in procedures!!

OK,

Thanks a lot guys, I feel a lot better now. It's been a long time and I'm a little apprehensive about the whole thing after spending so much money and all

Last question:

As I start to drive it (getting inspection sticker today), should I continue to not give power through turns? When I do, it doesn't grind at all, I assume since the LSD isn't "working" with no throttle. Should I continue to coast through turns for break-in, or is a little throttle (and thus some grinding) beneficial to the break-in?

Thanks again,

yup berkel, liek they said it's actually the way the clutches chatter. It goes away as you abuse the LSD more and more. Do more break-in if you can, not jsut the initial 45min ... remember also on teh figure 8's, no throttle on the turns of the fig 8.

What I use is BG Synchroshift fluid with a small wonder called Ford friction modifier. You can buy it at any Ford dealership, it's $4 for a small bottle. Then say bye, bye chatter.

I've had my kaaz LSD in for a long time now. I was wondering how long before It needs to be rebuilt. Mine was broken in properly and the fluid was changed on a regular basis. I drive it now and it feels like its not even there sometimes. Anyhow, when I floor it, I at least know that I dont get any torque steer.

Kaaz is good, but only for race trim. Also, its high maintenance and loud. I would prefer a helical type LSD such as Quaife or ATS. One of the best manufacturers for aftermarket LSD's (not the drug)!

Well thanks, but I ALREADY have the KAAZ

At the time, the Quaife was significantly more expensive (they're very comparable now). I had also "heard" that the KAAZ is more aggressive, whatever that means. I also heard it was loud, but did not expect it to sound like this, hehe.

I'll have more impressions as I drive the car and break it in. I have driven a few cars with the ITR LSD and it was nice. I guess it doesn't help much in straight-line accel? I also had a Sentra SE-R with viscous LSD and it was decent. I wonder how the Quaife compares to the ITR LSD and the KAAZ in performance?

Thoughts?

The ITR LSD is nothing compared to KAAZ and Quaife. I'm not trying to say that it sucks, but, the other two are much better than the ITR.

And, no, its not a high maintanence for the KAAZ. If you buy the actual KAAZ fluid, then, yes, it will be expensive($44/quart). But, I buy this Torco fluid which is the same stuff that that one guy just said. It comes with the little 4oz. bottle of the friction modifier. It works great!

I don't know exactly how long the LSD is good for, but, i do know that if you auto-x a lot, then, its gonna have to rebuilt sooner, because the more and more you beat on it, the more its gonna break down sooner.

And, to the guy who said that Quaife is better than KAAZ, that's not actually true. The Quaife is a gear type LSD, and, you can actually break this type if you drive extremely hard with your car. If your car hopes off the road when going extremely fast, the Quaife can break on you. The clutch type LSD's are not like that.

But, again, there's advantages and disadvantages to everything.

Dang,

That's harsh

I just got back from another drive and tried to break the kaaz in a little more. The "clicking" is now essentially gone in left hand turns, but it still there with right hand turns. It's definitely improving though.

BTW, I LOVE driving a modded Honda again

Hehe,

Well I'm still taking it easy, only 180 miles so far. I hope to have ~500 by Sunday. I'm varying the rpms and nothing more than 1/2 throttle and <5000 rpm.

Even with these limitation, car is very quick. It really feels torquey! I think short gearing with our TQ deficient motors rocks!

I have a crappy Neuspeed N2 header, similar to old two piece DC ceramic. This is probably holding me back, but I'm already way over budget and getting married in Sept

I haven't hit VTEC, but the Todas seem to have mad midrange. Like, I would say it pulls harder than my old CTR intake cam did in VTEC! Course, things were very diff then.

I'll have more to add after breaking everything in...

Take care,
