double clutching
ok, i have heard many many different explanations of double clutching. some sound resonable, some dont. i need to get this straight. So what exactly is double clutching, and why is it good?

double clutching is for downshifting...
say you are in 4th gear, clutch in, shift into nuetral, clutch out, blip throttle, clutch in, shift into 3rd, clutch out.
you dont have to do this with most newer trannys because they have synchros that help with downshifting, however when racing or downshifting into higher rpms it is easier on the synchros to double clutch and it will make the downshift smoother. do a search and you will find that this question has been answered many times.
double clutching has nothing to do with drag racing because you would never downshift in a drag race, unless you are a granny shifter. haha

you are describng rev-matching.
double-clutching is used on upshifts, but more handy on Mack trucks with very meaty gears.
(1st, clutch in, shift to neutral, blip throttle, clutch in, shift to second).

yup, exactly. all double clutching is is a technique in downshifting. in road racing this really helps because it allows for a smoother transition in downshifting when coming out of turns.
here, read this it will explain it all:

rev matching is similar but its a little different and requires you to rev your engine while you have the clutch in.
