"Gross Polluter" failed smog test!!!
took my smog test this morning thinkin i should pass easily but i FAILED!!! the tech said that i was running a little too rich and that a new cat should solve the problem, can anyone second that? results are on top
here's my set-up now:
-1995 Integra LS
-JDM B20b motor (non-vtec, stock internals)
-LS ECU (obd1)
-AEM short Ram
-DC 4-2-1 Headers
-Ngk Blue Wires
-Single Platnum plugs
That's pretty much it....
i had that same fun ocurence about 1.5 years ago
just get a new cat. that will solve all of your problems, it did for me
hit up dave @ smsp for a new one

the tech guy was pretty koo, he didn't really even look at the motor or anything, i think he actually knew i had the motor, jus didnt care. i knew his name cuz my brother went there so that kindda helped, i called him by his name when i walked in, unfortunitely i still failed the pipe test!
so a cat should almost garentee that i'll pass right? no other reasons or suggestions?

oh yea, i don't know if it makes a difference but i'm using the stock 95 ls intake manifold, injectors, and fuel rail, but the b20 tb b/c i broke the tps on the ls tb.

serious? i was running too rich though werent i? doesn't that mean i should maybe advance timing to burn it all off? i honestly have no idea, not my area of expertise, jus wat i thought.

um.. you're running jdm b20.. but you're using LS obd1 ecu..? I'd say thats the problem right there.

I don't think the cat is the problem. Notice how as the speed increases you have less emissions. To me, that mean that the cat is doing its job. In my opinion, I think the ecu senses something is wrong and is over compensating. Does your CEL work? Is it on? The only other way to check is to read you A/F and timing curve.
good luck

oh crap, so your saying i'm screwed! the engine check light is fine, it goes on when u start the car and turns off like it's suppose to. what i'm thinking now is that the b20b motor has less compression then a b18b, so isn't the ecu running too much fuel that i can't burn all the fuel up w/ the lower compression. could this be true?

just a suggestion if you haven't done this yet, but you might want to try posting this in the Tech forum... I think you'll get a better response there.
want to pass smog? use 87 ocatane and Iso-Heet. (Little red bottle $1.19 @ Kragen's)
The lower the octane, the more of a complete burn you will get.

i say retard the ignition timing as much as you can. (without it running like total ****) and have it re-tested.
you do NOT need a new cat and you are NOT runnign to rich. it's deffinatly running hotter. put in regular 87 octane and retard the timing and you should be set.

why would the smog tech even touch the timing? how on earth would he even know that you adjusted it without a timing gun?
it is illegal for the tech to touch or alter the vehicle when it's going in for an emissions test. if the smog guy is touching or adjusting something i would be taking it somewhere else.
laws or rules must be different up there but over hear if I'm caught touching anything in a customers car that will affect the reading in anyway i'm looking at BIG fines and charges. not worth it for what i get paid.....

Here is what I did to get my GS-R to pass, I also had VERY high NOx:
1) Put a cat on it (previous owner gutted the stock one...
)
2) Put new spark plugs in
3) Replaced dist cap and rotor
4) Confirmed my timing was set properly
After doing the above my car passed easily...

Okay here in Cali, if your timing is not within spec, they will put it in spec for you. I take it you are from somewhere else and you are not familiar with the smog ****'s of CA?

to add on to that list...
5) Make sure the car is FULLY warmed up when its on the smog dyno
6) Change the oil. Some people say it doesn't help but I don't think it would hurt

7) make sure your PCV valve is functioning. Replace if its messed up.

are u guys sure i'm suppose to RETARD the timing? i mean doesn't NOx mean unburnt gas? so shouldn't advancing it but off the excess fuel? i'm jus confused....
oh yea, i took a drastic measures today, i'm curently running a 92-95 civic CX ecu! that motor came in 1.5 w/ only 8 valves! i hope that shiet works....
i'm gonna try testing it with my old cat today and the ecu only and see what happens, if i still don't pass i'm gonna borrow a cat off my friend's integra
