Newbie needs HELP!!!!
Hey guys,
I am totally new to the honda world and not having a great time right now. I have a weak but decent 88 civic dx with a d15 in it "need a si motor cause this one is pretty weak". Anyways I am having a hard time getting the car to start. I know it's getting plenty of fuel because it will eventually flooded itself out. It seems the only way to get the car started is with starting fluid. Once it's running it does alright accept for down low. When I first start out it bogs down and then takes off. I am thinking maybe the timing is off but I am not sure how to change the timing. I have the haynes manual and it says to jump a wire but I can't seem to find where it's talking about. Any clues or idea's would be great. Thanks I attached some pics below maybe one of you guys can draw some arrows using ps to help out. Thanks a million guys.

First thing I'd do is to change your distributor cap, the rotor, sparkplugs and the plug wires. If that doesn't make some difference, I would also look into changing the fuel filter, and perhaps using some sort of injector cleaner. I think your motor just needs a little maintainence.

same advise here... do a major tune up and see how that helps... from the looks of your pics, everything seems pretty old... also... get some degreaser or brake cleaner and clean that engine...

Hey guys,
I will give that a try tomorrow and see how it works out. Hopefully that will cure it. I will through some shoots of the engine after it's clean as well !!!!
Thanks

yes, but on the 88-89 it is under the hood on the driver's side femder area.

after you change the cap rotor and spark plugs buy a case of engine cleaner because that thing is mad dirty ....
also it may be a fuel injection problem so check that out also

While you are changing the distributor cap, get a new spark guard (goes inside the dizzy cap under the coil (and behind the rotor). it keeps spark from arching around inside your dizzy and burning out your coil (I learnd this the hard way).

to me it looks like your timing is off, your distributor is all the way retarded (ignition timing is off) and that means that your cam timing is more than likely off, get the car timed, see how far it is off, but i now for sure by your pics that your ignition timing is wayyy off. im betting that it is your timing that is making the car hard to start. and change cap and rotor. then clean your motor cuz damn that thing is hella dirty
Tomorrow I will get the timing checked out. I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. Seems to help alittle but something is still lacking. I think tomorrow I will try to mess with the timing. What should the timing be set at for a d15 1.5?
dizzy should be rite in the middle, and on the cam there are two lines and a thing that says up, the two lines should be even (or as close to even as you can get) and the up should obviously be up when the #1 piston is at top dead center
Thanks for all the help guys. Come to find out, the car was throwing code 16. I pulled the main relay fixed a couple cold joints popped it back in and the car fired right up!!!! I am now a happy guy!!!!! Thanks for all the help!!!
