I am planning on joining the SCCA and racing my type-r. My question is. Do you have to go to one of their driving schools to compete in a SOLO I or II, or can I just show up and race. How do you guys recommend an 18 year that has never autocrossed start out?
I am also interested in the SCCA's rally events. My friend has a 1984(I think) Corrolla SR5 that he bought a year ago for $120. It runs pretty good and he might be willing to sell it to me in the $100-$200 price range. It is 5speed and I am thinking this would be a great beginners rally car. It's body is in good condition the only drawback is that it has 243,000mi and only puts out 76hp. I don't think that power really matter in a rally as much as carrying momentum but 76hp ( when it was new ) is not to strong, but hey it is only a hundred dollars or so. Any opinions would be appreciated.

no drivers school needed for solo II, just a car, driver's license and about $30. i'm not sure but i think you need a racing license for solo I (?), as well as mucho safety equipment.
as for rallying w/ a corolla...ummm...maybe?

Just show up for Solo 2 events, you can run in a novice class til you get the hang of it. Solo 1 you need a roll cage, and a couple of other goodies. Solo 1 is for more advanced drivers, so just get a helmet and go to a couple of Auto X events for Solo 2. You'll have a lot of fun driving and also talking with other auto lovers. Good Luck
