Oil Seal Retainer
Hey Guys, Does anyone know what I need to look for (pix or description) on a "bone stock" 1996 LX w/F22B2 to determine
whether or not I have the oil seal retainer recall fitted on this engine?

It attaches to the block and goes around the front balancer shaft. You might need to take the lower cover of the engine to see it though, not sure.
Also, I think the dealers keep records on what cars have had it done. Probably just have to ask your local Honda dealer to check your VIN and see if it was done. I didn't get my car in intime so I bought the part for $2.28, later to find out it was already done by the previous owner, oh well.
Thanks Gary, I'll have a look this evening (weather permitting....snow predicted here) At least with your pix I know what
I'm looking for. The car has only 35,000 miles on it and I'd like to keep it running good.

I have a 93 accord whith the stock F22A6 in it and this fancy little part isn't included from the factory, needless to say it blew out about 6 months ago and luckily i shut the engine off before any damage occured. I could look down in the belt cover and see the seal sitting out on the balance shaft. I called the Honda dealer for an estimate to fix it...$420, ouch! so I had it towed to the dealer and the service writer told me that there was a recall on that for some accords, he checked the vin and said that my car was too old, only 94-96 accords are covered. I thought this was a little shady because if Honda knew that the seal popping out was an issue on some of the engines they should warranty it. It took them untill 97 to start putting on these little "Retainers". The service writer said he wouldn't charge me to install the Retainer but they charged me for replacing the seal. So I left my car with the dealer all day and came back at 5:30 to pick it up. They handed me a bill for $580!... after i almost **** my pants they told me that "while they were in there" they thought it would be a good idea to change the timing belt and the balance shaft belt
I paid to have this done at a different shop when i first bought the car four years ago. I told them I was NOT going to pay that and if they wanted to take them off, fine go ahead. But they decided it would be better to just leave them on cause it would take the tech another 3 hr to put my old ones back on. So I got a new oil seal, oil seal retainer, timing belt, and balance shaft belt... None of which I should have needed in the first place! for $420. As you can tell I am still pissed off about it
i can say that it is the only time any thing has gone wrong with the car though
knock on wood
sorry for wasting your time if you read this whole thing

in case anyone is wondering, if you have had your timing belt replaced at a honda dealer within the the time of the recall (march 01 to Jan 03), they installed the retainer as part of the job. They still do it now but difference is they charge you for it.

Makes sence, it's right there when you changes the belts.

I should mention that the kit cost about $5 and it does not add any labor cost to a timing belt job. People in the STL area are lucky as Huey Honda only charges $280 for the job....
