Default help me choose my brake setup....

My '91 Civic is summer driven and I hope to do some road racing and autocrossing this summer. I did my first road course last summer (Gingerman) and found that my stock brakes would fade badly after 6-7 laps.

I am considering the following 2 brake setups.

Willwood 4-piston Fastbrakes kit w/civic ex master cylinder. Total Cost: $700

Civic EX knuckles with decent 10.2 inch rotors and semi-metallic pads with civic ex master cylinder. Total Cost: $300

My car weighs 2200 pounds. Will I need the Willwood kit for road course days or will the civic ex brakes be good enough. I am definitely budget minded.

Anyone have experience with either setup? Opinions?

bump for luke.....sorry buddy, i dont know shi@ about brakes, i havent lapped my car yet.....i bet the ex brakes with some slotted rotors and some high quality pads would totally rock though. i'd rock that. if you dont like em, buy wilwoods and sell em to me.

i've heard that the stock brakes work great for road racing, well, i should say, stock setup. Upgraded rotors and pads but stock sizes etc..

Those wilwoods would look sick behind some wheels but may be a bit overdoing it.
They also have a kit that just upgrades the rotors and uses an aluminum bracket to make the oem caliper fit. That should work w/ some good pads and save you some money.

I've also heard it's not a big upgrade to swap from drum to disc in the rear but i'm doing it just because i hate drum brakes. Anybody else have some info??

Listen to Count Blah!

IMO: if you aren't interested in spending GOBS of cash you can just do the 11" upgrade from fastbrakes that uses teg calipers! That's my setup and I used the Carbotech panther plus pads and did a total of 100 hard laps around Laguna Seca and NEVER felt brake fade. Infact my stopping capabilities just got better and better.

Psssst: What's wrong with this picture.

The problem was I put the brake pad in BACKWARDS... and this was the result.

I've got the fastbrakes 11" kit with 10.2" calipers, use the 15/16" master cyl from a 90-91 EX, and teg rears, you will have a bitching setup. Beware the Teg rear disk ebrake cables are too long and if you can't find the ebrake cables in a junk yard, they're about 50 per side from the dealer. Anyway, it saves you a couple hundred over the wilwood calipers and with that couple hundred saved you can do the rear disks if you haven't already.

How about adding Steel Braided Brake lines? This would be a cost effective
way to increase Pedal pressure in the same manner as an upgraded MC....

Here's my setup. I know its a bit on the bling side, but I will never want for more braking power ever again.

This is all FastBrakes stuff, and I absolutely love it. I am using the OEM master cylinder, booster and proportioning valve from my Civic STD. I have stainless brake lines, and good brake fluid. That's it.

would the stainless brake lines be a better upgrade then the 90-91 EX MC?

I rock 14" wheels so I can't use the 11" fastbrakes kit.
