Default Budget Swap for a beater

So, I just picked up a 92 CX hatch for a 500 bucks. It needs a new engine soon, as this one is smoking horribly. I have about a grand to work with here. What are my options for getting this car running reliably? This is just my beater, so it doesn't have to be super fast. I considered just fixing the engine, but it only has 71hp, and parts alone would be close to 500 I was told. If you were in my shoes what would you do? I am new to hybrids, but familiar with Hondas in general. Any help is appreciated. Remember, this is just a beater... all my go fast money is budgeted for my other car.

Thanks

A dx motor with an ex tranny, in a hatch, will be a fun little set-up.
Dirt cheap too.

Could I just drop this engine in, and go? This looks like it includes all that I would need. Anything missing. I think 50hp more than stock would make for a peppy beater.

A ZC is about the same price and has a bit more torque. Would it go in just as easily?

Well, hell fire.... I can get a complete B16 88-91 changeover for 1150 plus shipping. That's damn tempting.

You can do a complete LS swap for about 1000$... But I would highly recommened a D16Z6 motor from somone.. SOHC VTEC.. Make sure you get the tranny though-- cause the gears in your tranny are too long.. Should be able to complete the WHOLE swap for about 500$ and then you'll have 500$ to finish up about 85% of your budget boost turbo kit.. If not-- spray the bitch.. My boy runs 13.2 on a 75 shot in a stripped hatch with SOCH VTEC and only intake and exhaust...

I agree with the D16 idea. It's a SOHC motor but it rips. You can get one cheap. Lots of mods available for it as well. It can be made just as fast as a DOHC for much less dough.
